是老虎老虎被称为万兽之王，就是我们平常看见，老虎头上有横纹。我们中国人的思维看老虎头上有三条横线，像个“王”字，为什么说它是万兽之王?一它的体型是比较大的，它是靠捕食其他动物为食的。它在这个食物链里面，它是处在一个顶级的阶段。就是它是靠吃其他动物生存的，所以它在维持生态平衡里面起了重要的作用。老虎到底它是怎么起源的呢?我们刚才讲了豹属这一属的动物，大概是在五百万年左右以前出现的。它从哪个地方起源?是从亚洲起源的，然后从亚洲起源以后向外辐射。

一般认为老虎是起源于亚洲的东部，尤其是我们国家，我们境内。在我们国家境内，它早于豹属的其他成员，如狮子或豹子，首先大约在两百万年左右以前分化出来。我们国家的华南虎是我们国家特有的，被认为可能是所有老虎的祖先，是一个原始的类群。老虎现在分了有八个亚种，其中不幸的是有三个亚种绝灭了。我们下面就对每个亚种分布情况做一个简单的介绍：孟加拉虎，这是它分布在印度缅甸尼泊尔和我们国家的西藏的东部，及云南的南部。

它的体色变化比较大，有白色的和黑色的类型。我们后面要讲的白虎，就是这个孟加拉虎的一个体型变化。它不是这个像我们人类看见的这个白化个体，它不是白化个体，而是它体色的一个变化。它的体长大致在2.9米左右，体重是220公斤。雌体要稍微小一些，大概在2.5米长，重140公斤。
