我在斯坦福大学读一年级时，遇到了一件事，它让我真正懂得了自由的可贵。

我不记得自己当时到底说了些什么，或许我只是点了点头，但它引发了我对许多事情的思考。当然，其中一个是关于选择以及不同的人如何做出选择的问题，另一个问题是选择与优势之间复杂而又矛盾的关系。

什么是真正的优势?大多数人只是通过金钱和金钱所能买到的东西来对优势进行定义，认为拥有优势就等同于拥有一个舒适的生活环境，能够享受华服美食，有一张洁净且冬暖夏凉的大床。这一切虽然美好，但这就是优势的本质吗?我想不是。

如果人生由我们打造，如果我们直面挑战去开创自己想要的人生，那么我可以很明确地说，优势的本质是拥有最广泛的选择权。

想想那些非洲村民，由于自然环境的恶劣、政府的腐败或缺乏教育机会，他们只能通过耕种或放养几头瘦弱的牲口来勉强糊口，终此一生。他们首先要考虑的问题，显然是如何能让自己和家人吃饱并找到一个住所。但是，经济安全和物质享受并不是这些人唯一被剥夺的东西，他们往往还被剥夺了选择权，这和其他任何东西的缺失一样残酷。

这又使我想到了斯坦福大学的那个同学。显然，她很占“优势”，她的家庭很富有，她享有世界一流的教育机会。从理论上讲，她几乎拥有无限的选择权。

但事实上，她的选择空间受到了家庭偏见的挤压，这种偏见狭隘地定义了什么是“好的”“适当的”“有社会地位的”职业选择。当然，我并不是说成为医生或律师有什么不对，只要这是一个人真正的理想。但对我的同学来说，她的个人理想似乎并未在人生方程式中占据多大比例。家人在她身上强加了一个未来，至少在当时她逆来顺受了。

换句话说，一方面她的父母给了她无限的可能性，另一方面他们又剥夺了其中大多数可能性。如果她想成为一名老师或舞蹈演员将会怎样?如果她在无数的可能性当中，挑选了一个不太稳定但很有满足感的职业将会怎样?

毫无疑问，这个女孩子的家人是为了她的最佳利益着想，他们希望她能够过上舒适的生活并享有一定的社会地位。他们希望她能够做出“正确”的选择。

但是“正确”的选择，没有必要都得是稳定、舒适或理所当然的选择，其他人帮我们做出的选择通常不能算做选择。如果只是僵化地、被动地接受，那就是对我们所谓的优势的一种浪费。

人一生中，有几次快乐、几多美好，何不打开记忆的宝匣珍藏自己最爱的幸福呢？如今初中的我，偶然忆起儿时的往事，不觉联系到“幸福”一词。

我的童年早已扎根在曾经生活过的院子中了。院中有爷爷晒谷子的身影，有奶奶拣豆子的身影，还有堂弟玩耍跑跳的身影。曾经，我也在这院中，同他们一起过着快乐的日子。

小的时候，人人见了我都爱问：“你最亲的人是谁呀？”而我也会毫不犹豫地回答：“爷爷！”的确，我最崇拜的人是他，直到现在，他也仍旧是我最珍惜的人。记忆中，爷爷的袜子没有一双是新的，每一只上都缝着大大小小的补丁。每次看到爷爷的袜子，我都会郑重其事地对他说：“爷爷等我长大了，我一定给你买一双新袜子，一个破洞都没有！”每当这时，爷爷原本严肃的表情马上会变得暖洋洋的、乐滋滋的，“好呀，那我就等你长大了，给我买上一双好袜子。”爷爷也是一个勤劳的人，一年四季，院中从未少过他那劳作的身影。
