Chinese New Year (Simplified Chinese: 春节, or 农历新年; Traditional Chinese: 春节, or 农历新年; pinyin: Chūnjié, or Nónglì xīnnián), or the Spring Festival/Lunar New Year is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. The Chinese New Year period lasts for 15 days, beginning on the first day of the first lunar month (正月 Zheng Yue) of the Chinese calendar. The holiday period ends with 元宵节 （Yuan Xiao Jie), on the 15th day of the festival.

It is possible that the beginning of the year began with month 1 during the Xia Dynasty, month 12 during the Shang Dynasty, and month 11 during the Zhou Dynasty in China, but intercalary months were added after month 12 during both the Shang Dynasty according to surviving oracle bones and the Zhou Dynasty according to Sima Qian. The first Emperor of China Qin Shi Huang changed the beginning of the year to month 10 in 221 BC. According to legend, in ancient China, nian ("Nyan"), a man-eating beast from the mountains, could infiltrate houses silently to prey on humans. The people later learned that nian was sensitive to loud noises and the color red, so they scared it away with explosions, fireworks and the liberal use of the color red. So guo nian actually means surviving the nian. These customs led to the first New Year celebrations.

Chuxi or 除夕 in Mandarin Chinese. Chu means "get rid of" and xi is the day of the legendary man-eating beast, nian, that preys once a year on New Year Eve. When nian arrived, people used firecrackers to scare him away. Once nian ran away, people joined together to celebrate for another year of safe life.

中国最早称农历正月初一为“元旦”，元是“初”、“始”的意思，旦指“日子”，元旦合称即是“初始的日子”，也就是一年的第一天。正月初一从哪日算起，在汉武帝以前也是很不统一的。因此，历代的元旦月、日也并不一致。夏朝的夏历以孟喜月（元月）为正月，商朝的殷历以腊月（十二月）为正月，周朝的周历以冬月（十一月）为正月。秦始皇统一中国后，又以阳春月（十月）为正月，即十月初一为元旦。从汉武帝起，才规定孟喜月（元月）为正月，把孟喜月的第一天（夏历的正月初一）称为元旦，一直沿用到清朝末年。但这是夏历，亦即农历或阴历，还不是我们今天所说的元旦。公元1911年，孙中山领导的辛亥革命，推翻了清朝的统治，建立了中华民国。为了“行夏正，所以顺农时，从西历，所以便统计”，民国元年决定使用公历（实际使用是1912年），并规定阳历（公历）1月1日为“新年”，但并不叫“元旦”。今天所说的“元旦”，是公元1949年9月27日，中国人民政治协商会议第一次全体会议，在决定建立中华人民共和国的同时，也决定采用世界通用的公元纪年法，并将公历1月1日正式定为“元旦”，农历正月初一改为“春节”。

看完整场演出，我为我们班同学的才华所倾倒，短短几天时间准备，就有如此丰富多彩的节目——歌曲、舞蹈、书法，人人粉墨登场;钢琴、古筝、小提琴、萨克斯，个个才华横溢。

今天是腊八节，被寒假快乐冲昏头脑的我早把这个小节日忘记了。

“哦……”似乎这粥还有什么深意!我刚捧起碗，爸爸一阵狼吞虎咽，一碗粥已吃完了。他放下碗，大声喊道：“过了腊八，不怕啦!”看着奇怪的大人们，我也学着他们的样子，“大吃大喝”了起来。真是奇怪，一阵猛喝之后，原本冰凉的手变得暖和起来了。

边吃边听他们聊着，我才慢慢明白过来：原来今天是十二月初八，传说佛祖释迦牟尼成佛前进山修行，十二月初八这天因饥饿劳累栽倒路旁，被一牧羊女发现，用大米粥救活，后来大彻大悟，得道成佛。腊八这一天有吃腊八粥的习俗，掺在白米中的五谷杂粮总计不下20种，吃了以后可以增福增寿，故又称“福寿粥”。

原来，这看似普通的一碗粥有这么深刻的意义，于是我赶快请妈妈传授做“福寿粥”的方法。妈妈告诉我，先准备好要用的材料：必不可少的是粥米，豆、枣三样，其他可根据自家人口味配比，如核桃、粟子，玉米、葡萄干等。玉米要提前泡3—4小时，其他材料可混合洗净，再将所有的材料一起放入锅内，加足量水，烧开小火熬成粥即可。喜欢甜的就放些冰糖一起熬，用紫砂煲，三小时就能喝上粥了……

在我们这里，腊八粥熬好后，先要敬神祭祖，再赠送亲友，一定要在中午之前送出去，最后才是全家人食用。吃剩的腊八粥，保存着吃了几天还有剩下，却是好兆头，取其“年年有余”的意思。

腊八节喝腊八粥真有趣。这象征着多福多寿的腊八粥，大家可别忘了十二月初八喝一大碗啊!
