阿长是鲁迅家的保姆，她买到了“鲁迅”梦寐以求的《山海经》，但买《山海经》的过程也的确不易。

阿长回家后，一心想帮迅哥买回《山海经》，让迅哥高兴高兴。可是阿长又不识字，到哪里去买呢？

阿长走到街上一个一个的店进，因为她不识字，只能看里边是卖什么东西的。找到了书店，阿长问老板：“老板，‘三哼经’有吗？”老板不明白意思，阿长只能仔仔细细的找，一页一页的翻，看看里边的画是不是“哥儿”所说的‘三哼经’。阿长在几千本书里找了整整一个下午……。

书找到了，可是四本带画的书太昂贵了，连阿长自己也舍不得花。但是又想了想“哥儿”对带画‘三哼经’的渴望，就咬了咬牙，买下了。

书买来了，鲁迅看着书非常高兴，爱不释手，可是他却不知道阿长买书的艰难。

阿长听说鲁迅想看《山海经》，二话没说，收拾了东西就去买了。

到了家门外，阿长去了县城。她左看看右看看，看见了一家书店。她进去把书架上的书翻了一个遍。她看见了没有头的蛇，以两乳为眼，以肚脐为口；还有人头兽身的怪物。别的什么都没有。阿长便问老板有没有什么《三哼经》，老板错听成了《三字经》，老板给她拿了出来。阿长一看没有人头兽身的怪物、、、、、、阿长又让找，老板有些不耐烦了，说：“这里没有你说的什么《三哼经》，你去别家看一下吧。”

阿长从那家书店走了出来。阿长的肚子早就饿得咕咕叫了，便向四周看了一下。她正好看见了一条小吃街。她三步并作两步地跑过去，把串串香、羊肉串等都吃了个遍。

她想到是时候该办正事了，她又去了一家书店。那家书店的名字叫“新华书店”，她走了进去，问服务员：“你们有《三哼经》吗？”那个服务员知道她说的是《山海经》，就带她去到放有《山海经》的书架边。阿长问：“《山海经》几本是一套？一套多少钱？”服务员说：“一套有五本，共四两银子。”阿长摸出银子，数了数，只有3.5两。她想：“唉，都怨刚才吃的那些东西，把钱给花完了。只能买四本了。”她付了钱，拿着四本书就回去了。可是，她又找不到回去的路了，她只好用仅剩的0.5两银子打了一辆“黄包车”，到了家门口。

鲁迅看上了他想看的书。
