“一般来说，男队员至少要在少体校练6至8年才会被调走，他练了4年就被现在的教练朱志根相中。”弟子的“速成”，给朱颖留下深刻印象。其实训练初期，孙杨的接受能力和反应还不如别的孩子。

“出发、转身，学这些技术，别人可能只要教一遍，他反复练很多遍都不够。那段时间，队里甚至在是不是继续培养他的问题上有过纠结。”朱颖苦笑着说，“这是高个小孩的‘通病’。”

从2001年起，惊喜连着惊喜，孙杨几乎每天都在长成绩。“起步有些慢，但真正掌握动作后，别的小孩练不过他。我开始发觉他的有氧心肺功能特别强，通俗点说就是‘练不倒’。”训练中，孙杨总是特别能扛量。“布置十个400米的任务，别人可能练三五个就倒下了，他还很轻松地练得正欢。”

超强的有氧心肺功能，让耐力出众的孙杨在中长距离项目上优势明显。2003年进入浙江省队后，朱志根教练将他的主攻方向确定为400米、800米和1500米自由泳。主攻中长距离，意味着训练更加艰辛。每天15000～20000米的训练量，还需达到高标准。“可以说，每天都在挑战人生极限，要想走到高峰，每天都要超越自我。”孙杨说。

一位孙杨身边的工作人员感叹：“一般家里条件好的孩子，很容易就有优越感，根本不会像他这么卖力地去练，有那么顽强的毅力。”

“小时候，我们为了让他好好练，总是会适当地鼓励他。”妈妈记得，2007年城运会夺冠后，为了满足儿子的心愿，她花30000块钱的“血本”买了一台电脑，“自那以后，他就再没提过什么要求。”

随着年龄的增长，运动成绩逐渐提升，孙杨也变得越来越自觉。在澳大利亚训练时，妈妈心疼儿子练得太苦，半开玩笑地叮嘱说：“练到90%就要告诉教练你累了，练到95%就不能再练了。”没想到，孙杨很严肃地“教育”妈妈：“我现在是第一名，如果偷懒，可能连第十名都没有了。”

长期泡在水里与氯气打交道，孙杨也有鼻炎、咽炎等“职业病”，肩痛也发作得比较频繁。“机器每天高速运转，难免会有些零件吃不消。”孙杨说，“有时候也会累，但脑子里想着迈卢利、朴泰桓这些对手的名字，我就会充满动力，继续好好游下去。”
