there is only so much land on the earth, and so what we can do with it is limited. some people believe that human needs for farmland, housing and industry should come first, while others believe that some land should be set aside for endangered animals. i am of the opinion that we should reserve some land for the worlds animals for the following reasons.

first, mankinds need for land is constantly growing. if the demand is not checked in some way, humans will eventually develop all of the earths available land. at that time, mankind will have no more room to grow, and all the wild animals will have disappeared, as well as other valuable resources. second, humans are able to innovate and can use the land that they already possess in more efficient ways. animals are unable to do this. once their land is taken away from them they will die. third and last, endangered animals are an important part of the biodiversity of our planet. if they disappear, we cannot predict what the effect will be. therefore, we should treat such animals as a valuable resource to be protected.

to sum up, the worlds endangered animals are an important resource and we should protect them by setting aside some land for them. although mankinds need for land continues to grow, people are intelligent and inventive enough to put the land they have to better use. in this way, we can have enough land for farming, housing and industry, and preserve the biodiversity of the planet at the same time.

我最喜欢的动物是小白兔，它的身子软软的，耳朵是耸拉下来的，尾巴又圆又短，像一个小毛球。

我有养一只小白兔，它的名字叫白雪，才刚出生两个月呢！它虽然还是“兔婴儿”，但已经学会了淘气，如果一天不放它出来自由活动，它就用脚“踢”笼子的门，让你被吵得无法入睡，这时你必须放它出来，放它出来后还不会心满意足，非要你用一片胡萝卜补偿它！

I am a third year master major in automation at Shanghai Jiao Tong

University, P. R. China. With tremendous interest in Industrial Engineering, I

am writing to apply for acceptance into your Ph.D. graduate program.

Education background

In 1995, I entered the Nanjing University of Science & Technology

(NUST) -- widely considered one of the China’s best engineering schools. During

the following undergraduate study, my academic records kept distinguished among

the whole department. I was granted First Class Prize every semester,In 1999, I

got the privilege to enter the graduate program waived of the admission

test.

At the period of my graduate study, my overall GPA(3.77/4.0) ranked top 5%

in the department. In the second semester, I became teacher assistant that is

given to talented and matured students only. This year, I won the Acer

Scholarship as the one and only candidate in my department, which is the

ultimate accolade for distinguished students endowed by my university.

Presently, I am preparing my graduation thesis and trying for the honor of

Excellent Graduation Thesis.

Research experience and academic activity

When a sophomore, I joined the Association of AI Enthusiast and began to

narrow down my interest for my future research. With the tool of OpenGL and

Matlab, I designed a simulation program for transportation scheduling system. It

is now widely used by different research groups in NUST. I assumed and fulfilled

a sewage analysis & dispose project for Nanjing sewage treatment plant. This

was my first practice to convert a laboratory idea to a commercial product.

In retrospect, I find myself standing on a solid basis in both theory and

experience, which has prepared me for the Ph.D. program. My future research

interests include: Network Scheduling Problem, Heuristic Algorithm research

(especially in GA and Neural network), Supply chain network research, Hybrid

system performance analysis with Petri nets and Data Mining.

有一位“客人”来到了我家，这位“客人”是一只小鸭子。

这只鸭子，浑身上下布满金黄色的绒毛，像披着一件金外套。从头顶一直连到尾巴，有一条显眼的黑线，和黄色一衬，黑黄相间，黑的显得更黑，黄的则显得越发黄了。头顶的黑色浓些，远看好像戴上了一顶黑色的礼帽；身上的黑色淡些，但也很明显，好像一条精致的发带；尾巴全黑，摇晃起来就像一朵怒放的墨菊。脸上镶嵌着两颗黑玻璃球般的眼睛，望着我好像渴望我给它温暖。有些扁的·黄中带橘的嘴上面，有两粒沙粒般大小的鼻孔。

这鸭子的叫声，并不是人们常说的“嘎嘎”，而是像鸟一样，长短不同，粗细各异，时而尖锐时而优雅，时而急促时而缓慢，变化多端。在人睡觉时，它也一直叫唤，凌晨也是，真是淘气。

鸭子的步态，更是可笑。若把它抱出来，放在地上，在它前面跑几步，它就会拼命迈动它那短得可怜的小脚，冲上来，紧紧地跟着你，走到哪里跟到哪里，甩也甩不掉，像小尾巴似的，不由得让人轻骂一声：“跟屁虫”！《鹅》一文中说，鸭的步调急促，有急促不安之相。但我觉得，鸭子走路是急促，但急促得可爱。人如果走累了，坐在椅子上，它就会钻入那人的两腿之间，好像在寻找一种安全感。

我养了一只小猫，身上的毛很滑，有些白，有些黄，我给他起了个名字叫咪咪，它今年2岁了。它的样子好可爱，它有一双明亮的眼睛一到晚上时候就会发出蓝色的光芒，可以看到一切，鼻子很小，嘴巴上有四根胡须，可别看到它的胡须小，但它可以测量老鼠洞呢。

有一天我正在玩，突然，一只小猫狼狈地跑到我家，所以我也就成为了它的饲主。

丹尼全身的毛都是白色的，只有尾巴尖上有一块是黑色的。在下雪天我经常看不见它，因为丹尼除了尾巴尖儿和眼睛，其他地方都是白色的，简直和雪融为了一体。我找遍了院子才终于找到了它。我对它说：“小淘气以后可别让我找了。”它似乎点了点头，表示听懂了，我摸着它的头感叹道：“你可真有灵性。”

生日歌唱完后，我去拿了一袋牛奶给丹尼喝。丹尼优雅地喝掉了牛奶，又优雅地吃掉了那块蛋糕，就趴在我的床上睡着了。我想这可真是一个“绅士猫”呀。

第二天，我想穿拖鞋下地，小猫飞快地把我的拖鞋给叼来了。大概是它跟我很久了，把我穿拖鞋的习惯给记下来了，我心里一阵感动。

吃完晚饭后，我和丹尼一起进入了梦乡。不知道丹尼正在做什么样的梦呢？有没有梦到我？

我也正好可以静下心来写作业了，当想到写完作业就可以和它愉快地玩耍时，我奋笔书写、快速搞定了所有的作业。我怀着愉悦的心情，哼着小曲，推开了房门，发现它正歪着脑袋、伸着舌头正在舔碗呢，只见它左一下、右一下，深一口、浅一口，吃的津津有味，似乎还没吃够呢。

最让我期待的是散步时间了，我带着乐乐来到游乐区，和它比赛跑步，裁判一声令下，它就像离弦的箭一样，飞一般地速度向前冲去，我也不甘示弱地奋起直追，可它还是提前到达终点，并欢快地摇着头摆着尾，嘴里还哼哧哼哧的，仿佛在说“怎么样？我比你厉害吧？”我不服气，一连比了三盘，我盘盘输，只好心服口服。

每天晚上，它都会安静地趴在房门口，两只眼睛眯成一条小缝，小耳朵耷拉在脑袋上，鼻子里发出轻微的呼吸声，睡得可香甜呢。可只要有一点轻微的声音，它马上就惊醒了，警惕地竖起耳朵，开始“汪汪”叫起来，它可真是我家忠实的好卫士啊！

我最喜欢的小动物是小狗,他们不但可爱,而且很乖巧,很驯良。非常讨人喜欢。我的小狗——“满余”。它是一只松鼠狗，褐色的身子像搽了油似的，脖子上的毛向四周盛开，仿佛一朵花。水汪汪的眼睛像两颗玻璃珠。一条细细的小尾巴不停地摇摆着，真惹人喜欢。

“满余”一见到我，立刻又蹦有跳的。我走到它跟前，它扑来扑去的，有嗅嗅我的身子，高兴地把尾巴摇来摇去，我用说摸了摸它的小脑袋，它昂起头来添我的手，感觉暖暖的。有时我在吃东西的时候，它也想吃，但我没给它，它就会发出一些奇怪的声音来吸引我的注意。

它每次洗完澡后，都是我拿着毛巾去抱住它，它好像一个小宝宝，静静地躺在我的手里。

星期五一放学，我就急匆匆地往家跑。进了小区，不远处有一只可爱的小狗，它就是我家邻居养的狗，名字叫“小宝”。它可乖巧啦！

“小宝”全身长着光滑的毛，看起来像擦过油似的；它的脑袋圆溜溜的，像个大足球。脑袋两旁长着一对时常耷拉着的耳朵，它们特别灵敏哟！两颗黑葡萄般的大眼睛，忽闪忽闪着，但它们几乎被它的毛遮住了；眼睛下的小巧玲珑的鼻子是小狗的“护身机关”，只要有人经过，小狗的鼻子便会发出哼哼的声音，下面的嘴巴也汪汪地叫个不停，如果是坏蛋就会被吓跑呢！

“小宝”很爱干净，吃东西总挑干净的吃；睡觉也挑干净暖和的地方睡；大小便也不乱撒，总是走到厕所方便。

记得有一回，我到邻居家去玩。我一边津津有味地看着电视，一边吃着美味的牛肉干。突然，我觉得有什么东西搁在我的腿上，我低头一看，原来是“小宝”，它把两条腿放在了我的腿上，好像在问我要吃的呢。我站了起来对它说：“你和我赛跑，你赢了我就给你吃”。说完我就马上跑了出去，“小宝”好像听懂了我说的话，马上追了过来，像离弦的箭一样冲向了终点。最后，它比我先到终点，我实现了我的诺言——给它吃了美味的牛肉干。它一边吃一边还发出“嗯嗯”的声音，好像在说：“真香啊，真好吃啊”。
