Guy de Maupassant(18501893), one of the greatest critical realist writers in the world, is considered as one of three kings of world short story。 Maupassant created six novels and 359 medium forms during his brief lifetime, engendering a momentous effect on the later literature. And it’s his maiden work, Suet Ball that won him world-wide prestige.

In1870, with the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War, the real-based story Suet Ball happened. The heroine of the story is a humble harlot called Suet Ball. With a group of French residents of Rouen, recently occupied by the Prussian army, the 11 travelers are on their way fleeing to Le Havre in a stagecoach. In virtue of the appalling weather, the stagecoach moves rather slowly and has just covered a few miles by midday. Initially, those occupants snub Suet Ball whereas their attitudes alters with the emergence of a basket filled with scrumptious food and she caters for those hungry travelers selflessly.

The carriage doesn’t stop until they blunders into a Prussian-held territory called T?tes. A Prussian officer detains the coach with no definite reasons. In the next two days, the occupants wait with barely concealed impatience and eventually Suet Ball tells that they will be detained perpetually unless she approves of sleeping with the officer. Out of her patriotism, Suet Ball gives him a point-blank refusal. As it should be, those travelers behave furiously to the officer"s arrogance while during the next two days, they exemplify logic and morality in diverse ways to convince Suet Ball of its validity. What a kind-hearted girl! Finally Suet Ball gives up and sacrifices her body for everyone’s freedom.

The next morning, they are permitted to leave. But those "representatives of Virtue" totally neglect Suet Ball, casting scathing sights on the poor young woman while even disdaining talking to her and rejecting sharing their food with her in the same way that she did at the beginning. From their perspectives, Suet Ball turns out to be no more utilizable and should be condemned for her ashamed conduct. As the stagecoach travels deeper into the night, she seethes with rage against those hypocrites, and ultimately weeps for her lost dignity.

In this story, Maupassant highlighted the intense comparison between Suet Ball and the so-called nobles. Rapacity, hypocrisy, sexuality and nobility intertwine in the spotlight, eulogizing the underclass’ patriotism and lampooning the sham of the aristocracy. Maupassant portrays the inhabitants of the stagecoach in varied disparaging ways. The most luminous character belongs to the two nuns. At first they are portrayed as tranquil and subservient to Lord and demonstrate their fiery patriotic desire to dedicate to their motherland rather than a sordid intention like the other passengers: the nuns profess to haste to a military hospital to heal the wounded French soldiers, hence presenting the argument towards instigating Suet Ball to abandon her resistance. How absurd it is! Nuns are supposed to take strait vows and treat others benevolently. They fill Suet Ball"s head with arguments, arguing that it is not morally wrong to sleep with the officer in order to let the travelers leave, and that the longer she waits, the more young French soldiers will die as the nuns are not there to look after them. Superficially, they claim that it is for the good of the country but indeed they’re just taking advantage of her. Suet Ball"s resistance to the officer"s sexual advances again indicate her patriotism. Cruel wars have stripped all the external stuffs. In contrast to all of these is Suet Ball, a prostitute, revealed to be the most fiercely patriotic, virtuous, and morally admirable character, which Maupassant contrasts with the hypocrisy and snobbery of the others.

It is arguably Maupassant’s most famous short story. The carriage constitutes a microcosm of French society as a whole. And the narrative techniques of this story are rather sophisticated and carefully conceived. On balance, a real noble person like Suet Ball can’t be judged by the appearance or the occupation, his/ her moral quality will glitter when confronting the real ordeal. Consequently, I deem that Suet Ball is worth reading lingeringly, savoring every word.

Water Margin four

"Jane Eyre" is the British modern literature a significant position of the novel, is the representative of the author Charlotte, he has successfully created a dare to struggle, dare to the image of women, the freedom and equality indeed, after I read this book, I was very moved, also deeply such a defiant, brave heroine infection.

The full text can be divided into four stages: at the home of aunt Reed, at the raund school, in Schonfeld, in Saint John.

Jane was born in England, young when she lost her parents, aunt Mrs. Reed in a dozen years spent at home, but Mrs. Reed not good to her, including her children, even the servants dont love her, her uncle John even often insulted her, perhaps this kind of living environment, give it to her the thought brought great restraint, her behavior is limited, she had to fight. When she had the first conflict with her cousin, Jane said without fear, "your boy is really vicious and cruel!" You are like a murderer, you are like a man who abused others, you are like the emperor of Rome. Although the result of the quarrel was obvious, Janes brave performance, the spirit of resistance, shook any reader.

Because Mrs. Reed did not like Jane and sent her to a school at random, but on the contrary, she agreed with Jane. She didnt want to stay at Mrs. Reeds home.

Jane entered the Rao Wald school. In this school, children, including Jane, suffer from cold and hunger, and be beaten, punished, cut, hair and other insults, meals are very bad, and their living environment is not healthy. A cold can not be timely treatment, destined to a half will take a number of trained typhus infection, the childs life, Jane in such a school, witnessed all her hatred of the school, the schools founder, especially hate Mr Hearst, he is a pseudo word Jun, this school is a hell on earth. Jane in this school had her alumni Helen * Burns said: "when we are beaten we should It is without rhyme or reason., fiercely fought back, I am sure we should fight back, fiercely fought back, the lessons learned that US, that he will never dare such a hit. This will further show the reader her indomitable adherence to the resistance. You have to be convinced.

The third part is the core part of the book, Jane a governess at Thornfield house. For Jane to say that this is a very strange place, is Janes first set foot on the society, contact with the outside world, where Jane met Mr. Rochester, although Rochester is older than Jane, who looks not beautiful, but their thoughts have a lot in common, naturally fell in love with Jane he. Jane does not care about Rochesters vast wealth and fame and fortune, she is a real emotion, a friendly and open, she hopes they are equal between. But when she thought Rochester was going to marry Ingram and wanted to leave her, she said angrily, "do you think I will stay and become your decisive person?

Do you think Im an automatic machine, a machine without feelings... Do you think Im poor, low, beautiful, short, and I have no soul and no heart

You are wrong! - my soul is exactly the same as you... And I talk to you now, and not through the custom, customary, not even by physical, human - it is my spirit that addresses your spirit, just as the two had passed through the grave, and we at Gods feet, equal - because we are equal.

I was moved by this passage. Yes, we are equal. Even if the beautiful and attractive miss Ingram has a good reputation, there is a strong hearted family teacher. Jane also challenges the upper class. After a few twists and turns, Jane and Rochester were finally able to walk together.

Jane had been treated unfairly from childhood, but she achieved her career success and happiness by virtue of her fearless, acting and fighting spirit. I threw her away and wished her a better life.

Though the unfair treatment in todays society may be rare, the spirit of resistance is indispensable to all of us. We must learn to resist and fight against it because we are equal.

He had flower, The flower was very beautiful, He loved she very much, sheperfumed his planet and lit up hislife. But the flower was very proud and she liked telling lies,So the little prince, clespite all the good will of his love, had soon come to mistrust her. He had taken seriously certain in consequential remarks and had grown very unhappy. So he decide to leave his planet. He went to the vicinity of Asteroids 325.326.327:328.329 and 330, He meet many strangers. The first one was a king. He thought all men are subjeets. The second planet was inhabited by a very wain man to voin man, other people are admirerrs. The next planet was iahabited by a drunkard. The fourth planet belonged to a businessman, He was very busy, The fifth planet was very strange. It was the smallest of all. There was just enough room for a street lamp and a lamplighter. The planet revolves once a minute. The lamplighter must light his lamp and turn it out once every minute. The sixth planet was ten times bigger than the last. It was in habited by an old gentleman who wrote enormous books. The seventh planet was the earth. The earth is not just another planet. It contains one hundered and eleven kings seven thousand geographers nine hundered thousand businessmen saven and ahalf million drun kards three-hundered eleven million vain-men.

It makes me understand. The grow-ups aways need explanations. The gorw-ups like talk about bridge and golt and politics and neckties. Grow-ups like numbers, too. When you tellthem about a new friend, they never ask questions about what really matters. They never ask: What does his voice sound like?’ What games does he like best?’ “Does he collect butterflies?” They ask :“How old is he?” “How many blothers does he have?” “How much money does his father make?”

Read the book, I understand some principle. One sees clearly only with the heart, Anything essential is invisible to the eyes. It’s the time you spent on someone that makes somebody so important.

People have stars, but they aren’t the same. For travelers, the stars are guides. For other people they’re nothing but tiny lights. And for still others, for scholars they’re problems. For businessman, they were gold. But all those stars are silent stars. We, though, we all have stars like nobady else.

The author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London. The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, an orphan, who was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. He suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse.

While reading the tragic experiences of the little Oliver, I was shocked by his sufferings. I felt for the poor boy, but at the same time I detested the evil Fagin and the brutal Bill. To my relief, as was written in all the best stories, the goodness eventually conquered devil and Oliver lived a happy life in the end.

One of the plots that attracted me most is that after the theft, little Oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of Mrs. Maylie and Rose and began a new life. He went for walks with them, or Rose read to him, and he worked hard at his lessons. He felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crime and hardship and poverty. How can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind? The reason is the nature of goodness.

I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens-he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty. Although I don’t think goodness is omnipotent, yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded.

Oliver Twist one of the most famous works of Charles Dickens is a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in Britain in 18th century.

The author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London.

The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist an orphan who was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. He suffered enormous pain such as hunger thirst beating and abuse. While reading the tragic experiences of the little Oliver I was shocked by his sufferings. I felt for the poor boy but at the same time I detested the evil Fagin and the brutal Bill. To my relief as was written in all the best stories the goodness eventually conquered devil and Oliver lived a happy life in the end. One of the plots that attracted me most is that after the theft little Oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of Mrs. Maylie and Rose and began a new life. He went for walks with them or Rose read to him and he worked hard at his lessons. He felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crime and hardship and poverty.

How can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind? The reason is the nature of goodness. I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens—he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty. Although I dont think goodness is omnipotent yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded.

For me the nature of goodness is one of the most necessary character for a person. Goodness is to humans what water is to fish. He who is without goodness is an utterly worthless person. On the contrary as the famous saying goes The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose he who is with goodness undoubtedly is a happy and useful person. People receiving his help are grateful to him and he also gets gratified from what he has done and thus he can do good to both the people he has helped and himself.

To my disappointment nowadays some people seem to doubt the existence of the goodness in humanity. They look down on peoples honesty and kindness thinking it foolish of people to be warm-hearted. As a result they show no sympathy to those who are in trouble and seldom offer to help others. On the other hand they attach importance to money and benefit. In their opinion money is the only real object while emotions and morality are nihility. If they cannot get profit from showing theirkindness they draw back when others are faced with trouble and even hit a man when he is down. They are one of the sorts that I really detest.

Francis Bacon said in his essay Goodness of all virtues and dignities of the mind is the greatest being the character of the Deity and without it man is a busy mischievous wretched thing no better than a kind of vermin.

That is to say a person without goodness is destined to lose everything. Therefore I a kind person want to tell thosevermin-to-beto learn from the kind Oliver and regain the nature of goodness.

Me too. Yeah!

Thoughts or reflections on reading Wuthering Heights

The book was written by Emily Bronte, it published in 1847.But at that time, it seemed to hold little promise, selling very poorly and receiving only a few mixed reviews. I found this in our school library, I chose this book because the title attracted me. The book is structured around two parallel love stories, the first half of the novel centering on the love between Catherine and Heathcliff, while the less dramatic second half features the developing love between young Catherine and Hareton. In contrast to the first, the latter tale ends happily, restoring peace and order to Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. In the story, the two houses, Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, represent opposing worlds and values.

I spent twenty days reading this book. After reading this book, I felt for Heathcliff at first. Heathcliff begins his life as a homeless orphan on the streets of Liverpool, and then he tyrannized by Hindley Earnshaw. But he becomes a villain when he acquires power and returns to Wuthering Heights with money and the trappings of a gentleman. His malevolence proves so great and long—lasting. As he himself points out, his abuse of Isabella—his wife is purely sadistic, as he amuses himself by seeing how much abuse she can take and still come cringing back for more.

Catherine represents wild nature, in both her high, lively spirits and her occasional cruelty. She loves Heathcliff so intensely that she claims they are the same person. However, her actions are driven in part by her social ambitions, which initially are awakened during her first stay at the Lintons, and which eventually compel her to marry Edgar. Catherine is free—spirited, beautiful, spoiled, and often arrogant, she is given to fits of temper, and she is torn between her both of the men who love her. The location of her coffin symbolizes the conflict that tears apart her short life. She is buried in a corner of the Kirkyard. In contrast to Catherine, Isabella Linton—Catherine’s sister—in—law represents culture and civilization, both in her refinement and in her weakness. Ultimately, she ruins her life by falling in love with Heathcliff. He never returns her feelings and treats her as a meretool in his quest for revenge on the Linton family.

Just as Isabella Linton serves as Catherine’s foil, Edgar Linton serves as Heathcliff’s. Edgar grows into a tender, constant, but cowardly man. He is almost the ideal gentleman. However, this full assortment of gentlemanly characteristics, along with his civilized virtues, proves useless in Edgar’s clashes with his foil. He sees his wife obviously in love with another man but unable to do anything to rectify the situation. Heathcliff, who gains power over his wife, sister , and daughter.

The whole story make people’s mood heavy. Fortunately, the end is happy.

The author Emily Bronte lived an eccentric, closely guarded life. She was born in 1818, two years after Charlotte—the author of Jane Eyre and a year and a half before her sister Anne, who also became an author. Her father worked as a church rector, and her aunt, who raised the Bronte children after their mother died, was deeply religious. Emily Bronte did not take to her aunt’s Christian fervor, the character of Joseph, a caricature of an evangelical, may have been inspired by her aunt’s religiosity. The Brontes lived in Haworth, a Yorkshire village in the midst of the moors. These wild, desolate expanses—later the setting of Wuthering Heights—made up the Brontes daily environment, and Emily lived among them her entire life. She died in 1848, at the age of thirty.

I like this book because it rest on the unforgettable characters. Wuthering Heights is based partly on the Gothic tradition, a style of literature that featured supernatural encounters, crumbling ruins, moonless nights, and grotesque imagery, seeking to create effects of mystery and fear. I would like to recommend this book to other readers.

There are many parts I like:"The Ugly Duckling" tells of a homely little bird born in a barnyard who suffers abuse from his surroundings until, much to his delight (and to the surprise of others), he matures into a beautiful swan, the most beautiful bird of all. The story is beloved around the world as a tale about personal transformation for the better." The Angel"?, which about an angel and a dead child gathering flowers to carry to Heaven, reminds us of the punishment which we would accumulate on the ill-use and under-use of our talents and situations.

"The Little Mermaid lifted her glorified eyes towards the sun, and felt them, for the first time, filling with tears.” The Mermaids sacrifice is not incidental, or because she made the mistake of loving a human, or because she wanted a soul, or be a complete human, or as her final rite of passage.

Obviously ,as human beings and ‘children of God’, we should possess the essential goodness. The fairy tales show us about the importance of kindness, of perseverance, of obedience which we should follow in life.

I love the theme of Andersens Fairy tales : "There is no love greater than this: That someone gives his life for his friend." It also points out the importance of wisdom in a persons life. we can see more important aspects of life.
