这个故事主要讲了：从前有一座山，山里住着几户人家，日子都过的挺清苦，唯独王老汉家有一点家产。王老汉有两个儿子，大儿子叫王刚，小儿子叫博古。王刚勤劳，博古懒惰。但是博古是王老汉与后妻张氏的儿子，张氏一心想赶王刚走，好让他的亲生儿子独占那些家产。她便想了一个方法：让他们俩去山上种豆子，谁种的豆子发芽了，谁就回来。张氏给王刚一袋炒熟了的豆子。可是，炒熟了的豆子却意外落在了博古手里。把豆子种下去，王刚的豆子发芽了，可博古的就是不发芽。于是，王刚下山路过一条小溪时，游来一条小鱼，小鱼非常喜欢这个勤劳的小伙子，忽然变成了一个姑娘，想和他结为夫妻。而博古却还留在山上，最后被饿死了，他灵魂化作了一只布谷鸟。

双方打得天昏地暗，日月无光，把太上老君、如来佛和观世音也惊动了，他们全都赶来调解。调解的结果是，由蓝采和送东海龙王两片玉版，作为杀两位太子的补偿泰山则由观世音负责搬回原处。
