Now I am writing to tell you that I bought a TV set from your shop several
days ago. But when I brought it home and turned it on, I found it didn’t work

happened. To my surprise, your assistant didn’t help me to solve the problem. On
the contrary, he shouted at me rudely and refused to examine it.
I know that your shop enjoys a high reputation of good service, so I bought
the TV set in your shop. But today, I am sorry to find that such service should
have happened in your shop and your assistant didn’t seriously think of the
interests of customers.
I hope you will look into the matter and give me a reasonable explanation.
I am waiting to know how you will deal with it. Thank you for your consideration
and I am expecting an early reply.

Saving Water
The world is not only hungry, but also thirsty for water. This may seem strange to you, since nearly 75 % of the earths surface is covered with water. But about 97% of this huge amount is sea water, or salt water. Man can only drink and use the other 3% -- the fresh water that comes from rivers, lakes, underground, and other sources. And we cannot even use all of that, because some of it is in the form of icebergs and glaciers. Even worse, some of it has been polluted.
However, as things stand today, this small amount of fresh water, which is constantly being replaced by rainfall, is still enough for us. But our need for water is increasing rapidly-- almost day by day. Only if we take steps to deal with this problem now can we avoid a severe worldwide water shortage later on. A limited water supply would have a bad effect on agriculture and industry. Let me give you just one small exampie of how necessary water is to industry. Did you know that to produce a single ton of steel, it takes about 91, 000 liters of water?
We all have to learn how to stop wasting our precious water. One of the first steps we should take is to develop ways of reusing it. Experiments have already been done in this field, but only on a small scale. For us, the systems are as important as the spacecraft.

Knowledge can be acquired from many sources. These include books, teachers
and practical experience, and each has its own advantages. The knowledge we gain
from books and formal education enables us to learn about things that we have no
opportunity to experience in daily life. We can study all the places in the
world and learn from people we will never meet in our lifetime, just by reading
about them in books. We can also develop our analytical skills and learn how to
view and interpret the world around us in different ways. Furthermore, we can
learn from the past by reading books. In this way, we won’t repeat the mistakes
of others and can build on their achievements.
Practical experience, on the other hand, can give us more useful knowledge.
It is said that one learns best by doing, and I believe that this is true,
whether one is successful or not. In fact, I think making mistakes is the best
way to learn. Moreover, if one wants to make new advances, it is necessary to
act. Innovations do not come about through reading but through experimentation.
Finally, one can apply the skills and insights gained through the study of books
to practical experience, making an already meaningful experience more
meaningful. However, unless it is applied to real experiences, book knowledge
remains theoretical and, in the end, is useless. That is why I believe that
knowledge gained from practical experience is more important than that acquired
from books.

Cars and Air Pollution
Too many cars have created a lot of serious problems in our world. Besides congestion, accidents and fast fuel consumption, cars are responsible for a good part of air pollution in big cities. All the time, they are pumping huge amounts of waste gases into the atmosphere. These gases are very harmful, causing disease and even death.
One possible solution is to design and develop clean cars and clean fuels. In Shanghai, some of the public buses begin to run on natural gas, which does not give off as much carbon dioxide as the petrol. But it may take decades for the new models of clean cars completely replace the traditional ones. Another solution is to develop modern public transportation systems and restrict the use of private cars. If the price of petrol rises constantly and the public vehicles are efficient and convenient enough, most people will not buy private cars. And the total number of cars in big cities will reduce greatly.
On the whole, the elimination of air pollution needs the collective efforts from the government, the public and the environmentalists.

One of the most important problems a young person faces is deciding what to
do. There are some people, of course, who from the time they are six years old
know that they want to be doctors or pilots or fire fighters, but the majority
of us do not get around to making a decision about an occupation or career until
somebody or something forces us to face the problem.
Choosing an occupation takes time, and there are a lot of things you have
to think about as you try to decide what you would like to do. You may find that
you will have to take special courses to qualify for a particular kind of work,
or you may find out that you will need to get actual work experience to gain
enough knowledge to qualify for a particular .
Fortunately, there are a lot of people you can turn to for advice and help
in making your decision. At most schools, there are teachers who are
professionally qualified to give you detailed information about job
qualifications. And you can talk over your ideas with family members and friends
who are always ready to listen and to offer suggestions.

+ 加入清单when we think of halloween, we think of "trick or treat", pumpkins, jack o lanterns, vampires and haunted houses.
but do you know the origin of halloween? why does it fall on 31 october? what kind of festival is it? why is it so creepy?
halloween dates back to a celtic festival called samhain. november 1 is the new year of the celts, who lived in europe more than a thousand years ago. this is the day which marked the end of summer and harvest.
the celts believed that on the night of october 31, ghosts of the dead would return to earth. the celts celebrated samhain by dressing up in costumes with animal heads and having bonfires.
many celts settled in britain and ireland, where the festival became popular. those who moved to america took the tradition with them.
nowadays, most people celebrate halloween but only for fun. they are not worried about ghosts.
kids in america will dress up as devils or angels and will go from house to house calling "trick or treat", playing mischievous tricks and getting sweets.
americans spend more money on halloween than christmas! in xx, more than hk$45 billion was spent on halloween. and hk$15 billion of that was spent on candy alone!!!
kids in britain also dress up at halloween. they visit houses, sing songs or tell a joke to get sweets. many go to halloween parties and play games like "ducking for apples". you must pick up an apple in water but you can only use your mouth. try it!

In the modern time, the growth of technology is increasingly developed.
More and more people don’t use their brains when there is no need to use other
instruments. Too much people use technology so that people are lazier and less
healthy than before. They rely on technology too much.
Some believe that modern technology shorten the distance of human. For
instance, people all use cellphone to call friends or family, or computer to
search information, or use QQ, MSN, twitter, blog etc. These modern instruments
shorten the distance between human.
However, others think that it’s just the reverse. Technology makes people
use less face-to-face communication. The contact in real life is less and less.
People do less interaction to each other. In the long term, people will get
depressed without enough communication.
As far as I’m concerned, modern technology provides convenience to people.
It makes people easily to get information. Only could we use it correctly, it
does much contribution to us.
When memory began for me, my grandfather was past sixty-a great tall man
with thick hair becoming gray. He had black eyes and a straight nose which ended
in a slightly flattened tip. Once he explained seriously to me that he got that
flattened tip as a small child when he fell down and stepped on his nose.
The little marks of laughter at the corners of his eyes were the prodnct of
a kindly and humorous nature. The years of work which had bent his shoulders had
never dulled his humour nor his love of a joke.
Everywhere he went, "Gramp" made friends easily. At the end of half an hour
you felt you had known him all your life. I soon learned that he hated to give
orders , but that when he had to, he tried to make his orders sound like
suggestions.
One July morning, as he was leaving to go to the cornfield, he said :
"Edwin, you can pick up the potatoes in the field today if you want to do that.
" Then he drove away with his horses.
The day passed, and I did not have any desire to pick up potatoes. Evening
came and the potatoes were still in the field. Gramp, dusty and tired, led the
horses to get their drink.
"How many bags of potatoes were there?" Gramp inquired. "I dont know.
"
"How many potatoes did you pick up?"
"I didnt pick any. " "Not any! Why not?"
"You said I could pick, them up if I wanted to. You didnt say I had to.
"
In the next few minutes I learned a lesson I would not forget: when Gramp
said I could if I wanted to, he meant that I should want to.
Gram hated cruelty and injustice. The injustices of history, even those of
a thousand years before, angered her as much as the injustices of her own
day.
She also had a deep love of beauty. When she was almost seventy-five, and
had gone to live with one of her daughters, she spent a delightful morning
washing dishes because, as she said, the beautiful patterns on the dishes gave
her pleasure. The bird, the flowers, the clouds-all that was beautiful around
her- pleased her. She was like the father of the French painter, Millet, who
used to gather grass and show it to his son , saying , "See how beautif ul this
is ! "
In a pioneer society it is the harder qualities of mind and character that
are of value. The softer virtues are considered unnecessary. Men and women
struggling daily to earn a living are unable, even for a moment, to forget the
business of preserving their lives. Only unusual people, like my grandparents,
manage to keep the softer qualities in a world of daily struggle.
Such were the two people with whom I spent the months from June to
September in the wonderful days of summer and youth.
