宫崎骏自幼由于身体不好，故不擅长运动，但对静态的绘画却很有天分，特别是对飞机很感兴趣，并成为终生的爱好。虽然年纪小，但他从来不临摹，他说：“可能是母亲对我说‘不能仿效他人’吧，所以铁臂阿童木、小鬼Q太郎等都没有画过。小时候就一直被灌输这种‘不能仿效’的思想。但是因为看过这些作品，所以心里也受到了影响。”

1958年，宫崎骏读高中三年级的时候，日本史上第一部彩色动画长片《白蛇传》上映，他开始对动画产生兴趣。大学时，他进入了与漫画社最为接近的儿童文学研究会，社员只有宫崎骏一个人。

由于宫崎骏是次子，有长子继承家业，所以他可以按自己喜好去选择自己的职业。1963年4月，宫崎骏开始从事动画师的工作，最初仅仅是从事最底层的原画和设计工作，但很快崭露头角，升职为主要制作人。

1964年，宫崎骏看到苏联制作的长篇动画《雪之女王》，被深深地感动，决定选择动画师作为终生职业。从那时起到如今，他始终热爱，从来没有放弃过。
