The original Santa Claus, St. Nicholas, was born in the ancient southeastern Turkish town of Lycia early in the fourth century. His generosity was legend, and he was particularly fond of children. In sixteenth century Holland, children placed wooden shoes by the hearth the night of St. Nicholass arrival. The shoes were filled with straw, a meal for the saints gift laden donkey. In return, Nicholas would insert a small treat into each clog. In America, the shoe was replaced with the stocking, hung by the chimney.

The Dutch spelled St. Nicholas "Saint Nikolass," which in the New World became "Sinterklass". later changed to "Santa Claus".

Dr. Clement Clarke Moore composed "The Night Before Christmas" in 1822, to read to his children on Christmas Eve. It was in America that Santa put on weight. The rosy-cheeked, roly-poly Santa is credited to the influential nineteenth-century cartoonist Thomas Nast. From 1863 until 1886, Nast created a series of Christmas drawings for Harpers Weekly. These drawings, executed over twenty years, exhibit a gradual evolution in Santa from the pudgy, diminutive, elf-like creature of Dr. Moores immortal poem to the bearded, potbellied, life-size bell ringer familiar on street corners across America today. Nasts cartoons also showed the world how Santa spent his entire year constructing toys, checking on childrens behavior, reading their requests for special gifts. His images were incorporated into the Santa lore.

Santa is known throughout the world in many different names, such as:

Saint Nikolaas (Sinter Klaas), from the Dutch Father Christmas, from the English Kris Kringle, from the Germans Befana, from the Italians Bobouschka, from the Russians (a grand motherly figure instead of a male)

11世纪末来自意大利的宗教士兵将Nicholas圣人的遗物带回意大利，并在港口城市Bari建造了一座教堂来纪念他。很快世界各地的基督教徒纷至沓来朝圣这位圣人。这些朝圣者将圣人Nicholas的故事带回他们的本土，所以有关圣诞老人的传说在各个国家都各具特色。

12世纪欧洲出现了圣人Nicholas纪念日，以互赠礼物和慈善活动为主。德国、法国、荷兰则将12月6日作为宗教纪念日，给孩子和穷人们赠送礼物。

意大利的圣诞老人叫La Befana ;法国的圣诞老人叫Father Christmas或Pere Noel ;瑞士的圣诞老人叫Christkindl或Christ Child;斯勘的纳维亚地区的圣诞人叫julenisse 或 juletomte ;而英国的圣诞老人和法国一样也叫Father Christmas(圣诞之父)，他的形象比其它圣诞老人更庄严，更清瘦一些。北美的圣诞老人便是乘着驯鹿拉的雪橇来给孩子们送礼物的。

Thanksgiving Day in America is a time to offer thanks, of family gatherings and holiday meals. Atime of turkeys, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. A time for Indian corn, holidayparades and giant balloons.

The Pilgrims who sailed tothis country aboard the Mayflower were originally members of the EnglishSeparatist Church (a Puritan sect)。 They had earlier fled their home in England and sailed to Holland (The Netherlands) to escape religiouspersecution. There, they enjoyed more religious tolerance, but they eventuallybecame disenchanted with the Dutch way of life, thinking it ungodly. Seeking abetter life, the Separatists negotiated with a London stock company to financea pilgrimage to America. Most of those making the trip aboard the Mayflowerwere non-Separatists, but were hired to protect the companys interests. Onlyabout one-third of the original colonists were Separatists.

The Pilgrims set ground at Plymouth Rock onDecember 11, 1620. Their first winter was devastating. At the beginning of thefollowing fall, they had lost 46 of the original 102 who sailed on theMayflower. But the harvest of 1621 was a bountiful one. And the remainingcolonists decided to celebrate with a feast ——including 91 Indians who had helped the Pilgrims survive their first year. Itis believed that the Pilgrims would not have made it through the year withoutthe help of the natives. The feast was more of a traditional English harvestfestival than a true “thanksgiving” observance. It lasted three days.

Governor William Bradford sent “four men fowling” after wild ducks andgeese. It is not certain that wild turkey was part of their feast. However, itis certain that they had venison. The term “turkey” was used by the Pilgrims to mean any sort of wild fowl.

Another modern staple at almost every Thanksgivingtable is pumpkin pie. But it is unlikely that the first feast included thattreat. The supply of flour had been long diminished, so there was no bread orpastries of any kind. However, they did eat boiled pumpkin, and they produced atype of fried bread from their corn crop. There was also no milk, cider,potatoes, or butter. There was no domestic cattle for dairy products, and thenewly-discovered potato was still considered by many Europeans to be poisonous.But the feast did include fish, berries, watercress, lobster, dried fruit,clams, venison, and plums.

This “thanksgiving” feast was not repeated the following year. But in 1623, during asevere drought, the pilgrims gathered in a prayer service, praying for rain.When a long, steady rain followed the very next day, Governor Bradfordproclaimed another day of Thanksgiving, again inviting their Indian friends. Itwasnt until June of 1676 that another Day of Thanksgiving was proclaimed.

It is notable that this thanksgiving celebrationprobably did not include the Indians, as the celebration was meant partly to bein recognition of the colonists recent victory over the “heathen natives,”

You see, walked into the door, and two rows of stand proudly welcome our arrival, it is like a soldier standing guard, guard our campus. The teaching building of the right there is a basketball court, teaching to the left of the building is a large playground, where there are a lot of students are playing; every Monday, all the students went to the playground to the raising of the national flag. Playground on the left is a green lawn, where you can play, play football,,,,,, can be fun. The lawn is surrounded by a stand gracefully erect poplars, they be conscientious and do ones best to stand there, as if to defend the national dongliangzhicai. In looking at the outside is walls, walls covered with ivy, in the fall, ivy leaves slowly turned red, very good-looking, is really a beautiful scenery line.

学校通过组织一个圣诞节英语派对，丰富同学们的课余生活，培养学生的学习兴趣和热情，增加小朋友们对于英语的兴趣，让所有小朋友都能广泛参与。英语圣诞晚会，还能激发学生在我们学校学习英语，帮助学生提高综合素质评价，在同一时间，提高学生学习英语的能力，为以后学习和竞争中取得良好的优势。

今天中午吃完饭后，妈妈送我来到了我们英语学校举行的年度圣诞节晚会。

大约13：30的时候，我们的晚会正式开始了，我们大家都非常高兴。首先，我们观看了精彩的节目：有打架子鼓的，有弹吉他的，有跳拉丁舞的，还有打双节棍的，等等等等，真是精彩绝伦，赏心悦目啊!

看完精彩的节目之后，我们进行了三等奖的抽签活动之中。悲哀，我不是那30个当中幸运儿的其一，但是老师说，还有一等奖和二等奖。

我们休息了片刻，看了看同学变得小戏法之后，我们打二等奖抽签活动又开始了。果然，好心不负有心人，我是10名二等奖中的得主，获得了一个毛绒玩具。这时的我正在想，那丰富多彩的一等奖又会花落谁家呢?

接下来，我被邀请上台做了游戏。这个游戏的名字叫做家长互换。游戏规则：10位孩子站在舞台上，后面是自己的家长。然后，我们10位孩子蒙上眼睛，家长互相移动。1分钟之后，必须找到自己的家长。幸好妈妈有明显的标志物，手里拿着手机。

所有活动结束后，我们每个人都领了学习大礼包。里面有各种各样的学习文具，我们都异常的欢喜。

Christmas is coming! I called softly in my dream, I enjoy the joy of Christmas in the dream.

As bright as the stars hang around in the home, as transparent as crystal flower candle. 圣诞节来啦!我在梦中轻声唤道，美梦中我享受着圣诞的快乐。

家里到处挂满了像星星一般明亮，像水晶一样透明的花形蜡烛。在最醒目的小厅里放着一棵穿着绿珍珠做的“上衣”，再套上一件用丝绸做的“小纱裙”，上面缀着五彩缤纷的九色花、会变色的星星和月亮，永远不化的雪花，摸上去，一点儿也不冷，还热乎乎的呢!这个世界上的东西都变成水晶似的，不时地发出悦耳的“叮当”声。

被工作弄得疲惫不堪的大人们，在这一天都和孩子们一起玩耍，在空中飞舞。玩具们都获得了新生命，已经逝世的好人们都回到了从前。

圣诞老人架着美丽无比的驯鹿车给我们送礼，还不时把香甜可口的糖果洒在路过的小道上。我多么希望圣诞老人能送我一本世界上所有人的文章集啊!

christmas is coming

i like christmas, it is just like our spring festival.

maybe the spring festival is much more important and interesting than christmas, but i like christmas day better. because we can spend time with our friends and classmates during christmas. when it is snowy,

christmas becomes much more lovely, just like in fairytales. i can imagine i am in a fairytale, the girl who sold the matches is my friend, the ugly duck becoming more and more beautiful and so on. what a beautiful place! so we can also call christmas “snowy lovely day.”

on christmas day, shops are red and green. there are so many christmas cards, christmas hats, christmas dolls and many colourful things. so shops look very beautiful. we can give a card or a doll to our friends and say “merry christmas.” by the way, i think studying can also become much more interesting.

christmas is coming, it also means a new year will come. let’s study harder to welcome the new year!
