湘西苗族的服饰有着五彩斑斓的颜色，上身穿花衣，下着花色百褶裙，头蓄长发，包禇色花帕，脚着船型花鞋……男子的服饰要简单多了：头缠布帕，身穿对襟衣，衣袖长而细，裤筒短而肥大，喜包青色裹脚……都是亲手织布缝制。

苗族不单服装有特色，首饰也与众不同，造型精美，种类繁多。制作的材料有金、银、铝、玉，银饰最为普遍。佩戴的部分有银簪，凤冠，耳环，项链，手镯，戒指。生活中会用到银盘，银碗，银杯，银筷子，银壶，银勺子。他们认为银可以除湿，排毒，强身健体，连喝的水都要用银盆子放置几小时后才饮用。

服饰跟节庆有很大的联系，民族服饰价格昂贵，代价不菲，他们那的人一生可能只拥有一套完整的苗族服饰，所以只会在重大的节日里穿戴起来，其他时间都会珍藏在家里。

苗族的节庆较多，活动规模大，附近几个山寨都会参加，其中我要说的节日是赶年场。农历正月，湘西苗族人民最热心的赶年场，那天，男男女女，老老少少都身着盛装，互相邀约，成群结队去赶场，人潮如流，异常热闹，从天空中附视，成千上万的“小蚂蚁”忙碌的走来走去。三五成群闲话家长里短;年轻的姑娘们碰到心仪的小伙子会玩游戏对山歌;最开心的就是这些小孩子们，成群成群的嬉笑玩耍，追来撵去，调皮的不得了；买卖年货的；玩杂耍的……
