Christmas Day is on December 25th, though it originated in the western

country, now it is popular around the world. In China, people will spend that

day happily, they will eat apples on Christmas Eve, the children will put the

socks so that they could get the presents from Santa Claus. When I went to

college, I had an unforgettable memory about my first Christmas Day.

As my major is English, I have many foreign teachers, so that I could have

access to the local culture from them. Christmas Day is a big day for them, when

the day came, they asked us to spend the day with them, because most of them

left home and did not have families around. My classmates and I went to the

foreign teacher’s home at that day, we brought some presents, when we arrived at

his house, we found a beautiful tree with shinning lights. My teachers taught us

how to cook all the cookies, we were having such great fun. I made the cookies

with many favors. We talked happily and sung Christmas songs.

I learned how the foreign people spend their big day, it was such

unforgettable for me.

走到小院子，仰望着纷纷扬扬的雪花，真得比点点晨露都要晶莹，比丝丝秋雨还要细密，简直让人爱不释手!

雪花的种子像柳絮一样在天空奔跑着，飞舞着，有多少作家都赞美过它“千里黄云白日曛，北风吹雁雪纷纷”。

我张开嘴巴，几片雪花飘到了我的舌头上，顿时，那种清凉爽口的感觉一直醉到了我的心底。

不过多久，学停了。风一吹，一层雪又飞了起来，好似一层薄纱被风神掀了起来。一时间，整个世界好像被一层银纱裹住，又好像被一层薄雾笼罩着。路旁的矮松越发的青黑，树尖上铺满了“奶油”看起来就像一个大蛋糕，真想咬一口。

夜晚，微微的灯光和车灯把这个说小不小，说大不大的院子照得亮亮的，雪地上竟然发出了星星点点，一眨一眨珠宝的光来，那光，像姥姥家天上的繁星一样多，美得简直是无话可说。

雪的世界是多么的美丽啊!我被雪陶醉了，像做梦一样，永远也醒不过来。

I like teamwork because I can learn from others. Once, I was very shy and

did not know how to get along with other students, so everytime when the teacher

gave us the task and asked us to finish in the teamwork, I was very scared. Then

my classmates helped me, they gave me a lot opinion and they respected me,

making me the indispensable person. Then I became brave and gave my opinion, we

were in a group, every opinion meant so much. During these days, I was so

excited about the experiment, we shared our idea and talked happily. It was such

While cell phone brings many dangers. First, cell hone contains radiation which

hurts people’s body. Today, more and more people die of cancer, the main reason

get sick. Cell phone is one of such products, it hurts our bodies as long we use

it. Second, cell phone distracts our attention about discovering the beauty of

produced by Hollywood always win both money and fame. In recent years, the US TV

the winners all the time. But non-English language shows are starting to

arise.

The most famous non-English language movies are Indian movies. Because of

the Bollywood, which came before Hollywood, Indian movies are produced well and

have its own feature. Besides, more TV series of non-English language are

popular around the world. The Swedish show Skam is the hottest, and a lot of

Chinese young fans are so crazy about it.

Watching the show is a good way to learn the language and culture. It is a

good trend for people to pay attention to various cultures. Today, as the world

gets globalized, it is important to know more about the world and broaden our

vision. Though what we learn from the non-English language shows is limited, it

is better than not to watch.

With the coming of national day, I have a one week holiday. I really expect

to it, because I want to have a short trip during these days. I will travel

toJiuzhaiValleywith my parents for three days. I have heard that the scenery

ofJiuzhaiValleyis very beautiful in autumn and it’s the best time to travel

there. Autumn is my most favorite season so I want to enjoy the beauty of such a

wonderful place. I do some preparations for this trip. For example, I search the

Internet to see the travel raiders and I have known where the most attracting

place is and where to live in. I am sure it will be a wonderful journey. There

冬爷爷是寒冷的，很会变“法戏”，一吹气，树叶就由绿到红，由红到黄。在靠近学校菁华楼的草丛中，一棵大树挺立在土地上。唯一不同的是，它的“外衣”却被“冬天服装设计师”由常绿色变为黄色。“哗!”又一阵寒风吹过，那棵树的黄色“大衣”换成了黄色“乞丐装”。而那些掉落的树叶去哪了呢?哈哈!冬爷爷“突发奇想”，用那些树叶做了一张树叶“地毯”。

当然，学校还有一些“抗寒士兵”——-松树、铁树。不怕冷，始终站立在学校的各个角落。它们好像一个个倔强的小孩，无论冬爷爷怎么劝，就是不肯脱掉常绿的大衣，还用身上的尖刺恶作剧地去刺冬爷爷，冬爷爷拿它们没办法，只好无奈地走了。

冬爷爷还很喜欢“吓人”，他的两个“守卫”——-寒风、冷气一直跟随着他。当你漫步在学校的小树林，冬爷爷便派出寒风，突破树木的“防守”。在你身后，向你“攻击”，你一定会被吓死，当你走出温暖的教室，冬爷爷便派出冷气，扩散在学校，你一定会冷得直哆嗦。

按理说，除了梅花，其他花都会凋谢，不过有些花暂时还不会——比如说我们种在校门口的名叫“一串红”的红花，一直都怒放着，红得鲜艳，我们学校也还有一些花也像“一串红”一样怒放着。

冬爷爷的到来也给我们带来了变化：我们天天穿秋裤秋衣、毛衣毛裤，外衣等，不再像夏天一样穿短裤、衬衣，也不会再喝冷水、吃冰棒了。

这——就是我们冬天的校园，神奇，美丽，我爱冬季的校园!

There are many different beliefs about the origin of the Lantern Festival.

But one thing for sure is that it had something to do with celebrating and

cultivating positive relationship between people, families, nature and the

higher beings they believed were responsible for bringing/returning the light

each year.

One legend tells us that it was a time to worship Taiyi, the God of Heaven

in ancient times. The belief was that the God of Heaven controlled the destiny

of the human world. He had sixteen dragons at his beck and call and he decided

when to inflict drought, storms, famine or pestilence upon human beings.

Beginning with Qinshihuang, the first emperor to unite the country, all the

emperors ordered splendid ceremonies each year. The emperor would ask Taiyi to

bring favorable weather and good health to him and his people. Emperor Wudi of

the Han Dynasty directed special attention to this event. In 104 BC, he

proclaimed it as one of the most important celebrations and the ceremony would

last throughout the night. They clean it all up in the morning.

Another legend associates the Lantern Festival with Taoism. Tianguan is the

Taoist god responsible for good fortune. His birthday falls on the 15th day of

the first lunar month. It is said that Tianguan likes all types of

entertainment, so followers prepare various kinds of activities during which

they pray for good fortune.

Yet another common legend dealing with the origins of the Lantern Festival

speaks of a beautiful bird that flew down to earth from heaven, which was hunted

and killed by some villagers. This angered the Jade Emperor in Heaven because

the bird was his favorite one. Therefore, he planned a storm of fire to destroy

the village on the 15th lunar day. The Jade Emperors daughter heard of this

plan, and warned the villagers of her father’s plan to destroy their village.

The village was in turmoil because nobody knew how should they escape their

imminent destruction.

However, a wise man from another village suggested that every family should

hang red lanterns around their houses, set up bonfires on the streets, and

explode firecrackers on the 14th, 15th, and 16th lunar days. This would give the

village the appearance of being on fire to the Jade Emperor. On the 15th lunar

day, troops sent down from heaven whose mission was to destroy the village saw

that the village was already ablaze, and returned to heaven to report to the

Jade Emperor. Satisfied, the Jade Emperor decided not to burn down the village.

From that day on, people celebrate the anniversary on the 15th lunar day every

year by carrying red lanterns on the streets and exploding firecrackers and

fireworks.

There are many stories on how this festival was created. One other story is

about a maid. In the Han Dynasty, Mr. Eastern was a favorite advisor of the

emperor. One winter day, he went to the garden and heard a little girl crying

and getting ready to jump into a well to commit suicide. Mr. Eastern stopped her

and asked why. She said she was a maid in the emperors palace and her name was

Yuan-Xiao.

She never had the chance to meet her family after she started worked at the

palace. She missed them so much every 12th lunar month. If she couldnt have the

chance to show her filial piety in this life, she would rather die. Mr. Eastern

promised her to find a way so she could reunion with her family. Mr. Eastern

left the palace and set up a fortune-telling stall on the street and disguised

himself as a fortuneteller. Because of his reputation, many people asked for

their fortunes.

But every one got the same prediction - a severe fire accident on the 15th

lunar day. The rumor spread quickly. Everyone was worried about the future and

asked Mr. Eastern for help. Mr. Eastern said, "On the 13th lunar day, the God of

Fire will send a fairy lady in red to burn down the city. If you see a lady in

red wearing green pants riding a black horse on that day, you should ask for her

mercy." On that day, Yuan-Xiao pretended to be the red fairy lady. When people

asked for her help, she said, "Im the messenger of the God of Fire and came to

check on the city and Im going to set up fire on 15th. This is an order from

Jade Emperor. He will watch from the heavens.

I will give you a copy of the imperial decree from the God of Fire. You

should go to ask your emperor to find a way out." After she left, people went to

the palace to show the emperor the decree which reads "The capital city is in

trouble. Fire burns on the palace, and fire from Heaven burns all night long on

the 15th." The emperor of Han Dynasty was very shocked. He called and asked Mr.

Eastern for advice. After pondering for a while, Mr. Eastern said, "I heard that

the God of Fire likes to eat Tang-Yuan (Sweet dumpling). Does Yuan-Xiao often

cook Tang-Yuan for you? On the 15th lunar day, let Yuan-Xiao make Tang-Yuan.

Your Majesty will take charge of the worshipping ceremony and you will give

an order to every house to prepare Tang-Yuan to worship the God of Fire at the

same time. Also, deliver another order to ask every house in the city to hang

red lantern and explode fire crackers. Lastly, everyone in the palace and people

outside the city should carry their lanterns on the street to watch the lantern

decoration and fireworks. If everything goes this way, the Jade Emperor would be

deceived.

Then everyone can avoid the fire accident." The emperor happily followed

the plan. Lanterns were everywhere in the capital city on the night of the 15th

lunar day. People were walking on the street. Fire crackers kept making lots of

noise. It looked like the entire city was on fire. Yuan-Xiaos parents went into

the palace to watch the lantern decorations, and Yuan-Xiao made a big lantern

and wrote her name on the lantern. They happily reunited together after her

parents called her name. Everybody was safe during the night. The emperor of Han

Dynasty had a new order that people should do the same thing every year. Since

Yuan-Xiao cooked the best Tan-Yuan, people called the day Yuan-Xiao

Festival.

Young people were chaperoned in the streets in hopes of finding love.

Matchmakers acted busily in hopes of pairing couples. The brightest lanterns

were symbolic of good luck and hope. As time has passed, the festival no longer

has such implications.

Those who do not carry lanterns often enjoy watching informal lantern

parades. In addition to eating tangyuan (simplified Chinese: 汤圆; traditional

Chinese: 湯圓; pinyin: tāngyuán), another popular activity at this festival is

guessing lantern riddles (which became part of the festival during the Tang

Dynasty), which often contain messages of good fortune, family reunion, abundant

harvest, prosperity and love.

Important to save water

Water is a kind of liquid. It has no taste or smell. It is transparent, too. Water is useful and is important to us. Why? For example, we use water to water the plants. We use water to wash our face or to have a bath. We drink water or we will die…Water is also very important for China. There are 2.8 hundred millions of steres of water in China, but everyone can only use 2300 steres. It is only twenty–five per sent in the world.

Not too long ago, there was a man called Jacques Cousteau. He loved the beautiful colors, and the beautiful fish in the sea. However, when he returned some years later, the colorful coral reefs were dead and grey because the factory near the sea poured waste water into the sea. Jacques Cousteau decided to tell people how important it was to save the environment under the sea. He started the“ Cousteau Society ” to help protect life in the sea. Now there are over 30000 members all over the world. Since water covers most of the earth, Cousteau knew that we should keep the sea clean. We should not litter the sea, and should clean up the dirty parts. As water is very important to our environment, he encouraged everyone to take part in protecting our lakes, rivers, sea and ocean.

There are still a few people who are not protecting the water now in the world. For example, some factories pour waste things into the rivers, lakes or into the sea near by. The water there has become very dirty and we can’t use them at all. Although there are seventy–five per sent of water in the world, we can only use fresh water, that there is only a little. So we should use little water when we need to use it. For example, I do not use too much water when I am washing my face or having a bath… It is important for us to keep the water clean. You may ask yourself, have I ever poured or thrown dirty things into the water? If your answer is “No”, that means you have already helped to protect the environment. It is our duty to protect the environment. You may ask yourself again, have I ever helped to clean up the water? If your answer is “Yes”, that means that you have already done something useful to improve the water. If we use up all the water, it is difficult for us to get it from anywhere, including the universe. It is terrible to think that people are too thirsty to live! I believe, that if everyone helps to protect the water, the water must be protected. You do not want to “kill” your son or your grandson, do you? So now let us to protect the water! 在这炎热的夏日里最大的诱惑是什么?当然是能进入到冰凉的世界!如果能在夏天感受到像冬天一样和冰雪接触到的快感，那简直是太爽了!但是，你一定会说，夏天怎么可能有冰雪呢?那我就告诉你吧，这个暑假我和爸妈去了上海银七星室内滑雪场，体验到了冬天凉爽的感觉和滑雪的乐趣!

我们来到滑雪场，买好票，换上厚厚的滑雪服。由于我们是初次来滑雪，于是请了位教练来指导我们。教练带我们领取了滑雪鞋，此鞋狂重，穿上后如绑上铅袋，只能靠小腿带动身体前进，比企鹅还笨重，走起路来就像机器人一样，很滑稽。再领了雪橇和雪杖，装备就齐全了，大家进场吧!

我们进入雪场，顿时开朗，迎面而来的是一片白皑皑的积雪，看上去煞是壮观。刚才在室外还是骄阳似火，这里却是一片冰天雪地，一阵凉气扑面而来，好凉呀!我赶紧带上帽子和手套。

教练开始教我们的第一个动作是刹车，这个动作要求将滑板呈内八字，身体向前倾，双腿弯曲双膝靠拢，我们在跟着做了这个动作以后，教练又教我们将雪橇间的八字向内收拢一点，就可以向下滑动，雪橇越平行速度越快。我们初学者只能保持内八字腿型向下滑，这样速度可以慢点，如果滑不动时还可以借助雪杖来进行助力。教练教完我们这些基本动作后，立即要求我们上雪坡。

我们乘扶梯来到第一段坡顶，装上滑雪板，开始向下滑，身体前倾，弯腰，收起雪杖，冷冷的风吹在脸上，感觉真得很爽!滑下的时候一开始尚可，但后面速度越来越快，我大叫着：“让开，让开……”可谁知前面有一个人摔了一个大跟头正坐在地上，我完全不能控制了，只能随着呼呼的风冲下去，啪嗒一下撞上前面一人而摔倒。我摔倒坐在地上，回头看，只见老爸很猛地向下冲，突然啪嗒一下又摔倒在地。我哈哈大笑起来，抓起一团雪向老爸扔去，然后做了个鬼脸。这时又见老妈一路尖叫着冲了下来，最后又啪嗒一下摔倒在地。我笑得前仰后合，我们向四周看去，像我们这样的情景时时在上演，还有的一路狂叫着“救命啊，救命啊……”向下冲，然后又摔得人仰马翻。我们都哈哈大笑，滑雪的乐趣莫过于此吧!

我们一轮又一轮地滑着，尽情地享受着在这冰天雪地中最欢乐的时光。

几个小时的时间很快就过去了，我们又要去面对那炎炎夏日了，真期待着第二次的滑雪记。

biggest day in the western countries. But not so many people know about the

White Christmas in China. The day before Christmas Day, if it snows, then the

world is in white color. People are happy about that, because they think it

means the happiness and luck. So that’s the meaning of White Christmas. It

always snows a lot on Christmas Eve, because it is in winter in the western

countries. All the families get together and enjoy their moment while watching

the white snow. What an enjoyable atmosphere for a family.

The usage of Internet becomes one of the most controversial topics in the

society. As a college student, I believe Internet is beneficial to me more than

the way it harms me. There are many advantages for using Internet.

First, I can best use my time to find information online instead of going

to different libraries. Also, the information can be dated back in decades ago.

It is very helpful to use those information as reference and historical proof.

In the library, it is hard to find so much "old" information. Another advantage

to use Internet is that I can stay home and have a lecture online. It is much

more convenience to me because I can stay warm to have class in the winter time

instead of spending two hours on the bus and physically attend class. In

addition, Internet provides me a better way to communicate with my friends and

professors. I can get response from my professor in a few minutes instead of

waiting outside of his door for hours. Some of my friends are living in a

foreign countries, I can simply just drop him an email whenever I can and get a

message from him very quick. It is much better than waiting for letters. Also,

the email will not lose while the letter might be losing in the process of

delivery.

However, there are also disadvantage of using Internet. For example, I

might spend too much time on the Internet to concentrate on my study. Also,

there is a chance that I am cheated because of the Internet purchasing. Last,

Internet has lots of information, both helpful and harmful. There might be too

much tempatation that I will access some of the harmful information I can on the

Internet.

Even though the usage of Internet has both positive and negative effect to

me, I still consider Internet is a symbol of technology development. I believe I

can use the Internet very well as long as I know how to control myself.

Winters in Taipei are very cold during the evening and very windy during the daytime. I usually look forward to the Lunar New Years Day and the winter vacation when I can go to the village where the climate is warmer during these holidays. Also, I look forward to seeing my grandmother, great-grandmother, and my friends in the village; I like my grandmothers food very much. Winter is the time everyone is in a festive mood.

In the city, I usually do a lot of reading at home in the winter because of the cold .

When memory began for me, my grandfather was past sixty-a great tall man

with thick hair becoming gray. He had black eyes and a straight nose which ended

in a slightly flattened tip. Once he explained seriously to me that he got that

flattened tip as a small child when he fell down and stepped on his nose.

The little marks of laughter at the corners of his eyes were the prodnct of

a kindly and humorous nature. The years of work which had bent his shoulders had

never dulled his humour nor his love of a joke.

Everywhere he went, "Gramp" made friends easily. At the end of half an hour

you felt you had known him all your life. I soon learned that he hated to give

orders , but that when he had to, he tried to make his orders sound like

suggestions.

One July morning, as he was leaving to go to the cornfield, he said :

"Edwin, you can pick up the potatoes in the field today if you want to do that.

" Then he drove away with his horses.

The day passed, and I did not have any desire to pick up potatoes. Evening

came and the potatoes were still in the field. Gramp, dusty and tired, led the

horses to get their drink.

"How many bags of potatoes were there?" Gramp inquired. "I dont know.

"

"How many potatoes did you pick up?"

"I didnt pick any. " "Not any! Why not?"

"You said I could pick, them up if I wanted to. You didnt say I had to.

"

In the next few minutes I learned a lesson I would not forget: when Gramp

said I could if I wanted to, he meant that I should want to.

Gram hated cruelty and injustice. The injustices of history, even those of

a thousand years before, angered her as much as the injustices of her own

day.

She also had a deep love of beauty. When she was almost seventy-five, and

had gone to live with one of her daughters, she spent a delightful morning

washing dishes because, as she said, the beautiful patterns on the dishes gave

her pleasure. The bird, the flowers, the clouds-all that was beautiful around

her- pleased her. She was like the father of the French painter, Millet, who

In a pioneer society it is the harder qualities of mind and character that

are of value. The softer virtues are considered unnecessary. Men and women

struggling daily to earn a living are unable, even for a moment, to forget the

business of preserving their lives. Only unusual people, like my grandparents,

manage to keep the softer qualities in a world of daily struggle.

Chinese New Year starts with the new moon on the first day of the new year

and ends on the the full days later. In china,people regard Spring Festival as

the most important thing.People studied and worked throughout the year.No matter

how far and how busy, they must do their best to go back home.Thats a tradition

and now becoming a habit. During this time,transport is extremely busy.Although

the way is difficult,it cant reduce the urgent feeling of going home.I cant

describe this feeling,only the people that experienced it can

understand.Actually,on one hand,people miss their family,and they need to get

comfort in the family.On the other hand,getting together is a symbol of

blessedness and auspiciousness.People in other country dont have this

consciousness that going home is necessary.For example,American could celebrate

the Christmas in everywhere they like or with anybody.This diversity is

occasioned by different culture between two countries.

On Spring festivals eve,the whole family prepare the dinner.Of

course,dumplings is essential.In the

evening,family members always sit at the television and watch Spring

Festival Gala.At 0:00,people set off firecrackers and fireworks,at the same

time,children pay New Year,s call to old people.The old people give money to the

children as a lunar new year gift.Usually,people stay up late or all night.

On lunar New Years Day, the Chinese family eat vegetarian dumplings which

imply they will plain and neat in this year. People change their new

clothes,this stands for a new beginning.Next,people visit relatives with some

gifts.The second day is son-in-laws festival,the husband and married women

visit their side of the family.In a word,Chinese attach great importance to

Spring Festival.

Most smokers are males, because they need to smoke for social communication

or for set themselves free from the pressure. In the packaging, we can find that

every packaging has written the words that smoking is harmful to health. Though

smokers know it, they ignore it. For the harmony of the family, people should

quit smoking.

To quit smoking is not easy, people know smoking does harm to their health,

but they just can’t resist the temptation and then start to smoke again, so they
