读一年级时，我总觉得外公喜欢嘴儿灵巧的表妹。但有一天，妈妈对我说：“外公常说你老实、淳朴，他回忆起去托儿所接你的情景，乐得合不拢嘴，问你记不记得?”我含泪点头，原来外公也喜欢朴实的人。

读二年级时，我的钢笔字写得很难看。外公看了看我写的名字，掏出口袋里的钢笔，在我的抄词本上写了一个“五星红旗”的词儿，苍劲有力。他深沉地说了一句：“中国人的汉字一定要写好!”又把那支粗粗的钢笔给了我。于是我咬着牙拼命练笔，终于落得一手挺漂亮的字。

后来有一天妈妈忽然心血来潮似地对我谈外公，我知道了他的身世：他小时候做过童工，每天做牛做马，解放后入了党，搞起了党政工作，勤勤恳恳。“文化大革命”中有人诬陷他是“走资派”，他为人正直，没有低下头。几经沧桑，他变得消瘦、多病，却仍对国家有一腔无言的深情。“中国人的汉字一定要写好!”那低沉的声音又响在了耳边。顿时，外公的身影高大了许多。

我正在慢慢长大成人，外公越来越衰老。他的脸愈发瘦了，蜡黄蜡黄的脸，皱纹重重，听妈妈说他已得了“癌”，是不治之症。外公心里明白，却很从容。躺在床上听广播、看报，还时常伺弄他在天井里种的葡萄。

正当葡萄成熟时，外婆怕蚊子，把葡萄拔了，外公也无奈。

他就这样走了，没有遗憾地走了。

思绪断了，我握着那支粗粗的钢笔，又流下了眼泪，这支钢笔便让我记起一位胸怀恬静的长辈，记起他那颗对亲人、对生活、对祖国充满朴实深沉的爱心。
