In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Fathers Day. Finally in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Fathers Day.

Father‘s Day is a fairly new celebration in the British calendar compared with Mother‘s Day, which has been a very popular and well celebrated festival in the UK for a very long time.

The origins of the celebrati on are American and it was inspired by the actions of a man named William Smart. He was a veteran of the US Civil War and his wife died giving birth to their sixth child. He raised six children alone without remarrying, which was undoubtedly unusual back in those days.

His daughter, Sonora Dodd, realised when she was an adult what her father had sacrificed for his children. It was in the early 1900s and she was actually at church one day, listening to a sermon on Mother‘s Day. She thought there should also be a Father‘s Day celebration.

And so the tradition was born, on the third Sunday every June, close to the anniversary of Sonora‘s father‘s death. Britain took the idea of Father‘s Day from the American celebration and it has been celebrated officially since the 1970s

Seeking abetter life, the Separatists negotiated with a London stock company to financea pilgrimage to America. Most of those making the trip aboard the Mayflowerwere non-Separatists, but were hired to protect the companys interests. Onlyabout one-third of the original colonists were Separatists.

And the remainingcolonists decided to celebrate with a feast ——including 91 Indians who had helped the Pilgrims survive their first year. Itis believed that the Pilgrims would not have made it through the year withoutthe help of the natives. The feast was more of a traditional English harvestfestival than a true “thanksgiving” observance. It lasted three days.

The Pilgrims, who set sail from Plymouth, England on a ship called the Mayflower on September 6, 1620, were fortune hunters, bound for the resourceful New World. 记得那时我还在放寒假，一天，吃过晚饭后，父亲又谈起他曾经的经历，这时，我灵机一动：反正爸爸这几天闲着也是闲着，不如干脆就让他将这些经历写下来投稿呗！经不住我的再三劝说，最后他答应了在电脑上投稿。

接着，他略一思考，一段在我看来精美的文字便出现在屏幕上。后来为了让爸爸集中精力写作，我便去和“周公”约会去了。正当我们俩谈兴正浓的时候，爸爸这时候却来问我写完了该如何保存，我极不情愿的去为他保存，心里却埋怨他打扰了我的兴致，我漫不经心的动手保存，睡眼朦胧的看着屏幕上密密麻麻的文字在瞬间便消失了，我顿时睡意全消。天哪！我竟将那一大段文字删了？大约三万字的文字就这样没了？我删的？我在心里不住的问自己。

此时，看着父亲已经略带有些黑眼圈我真希望父亲能狠狠地批评我一顿，或者打几下也行哪！

可父亲只是轻轻地说了一句：“算了，没了就没了吧，去睡吧，不早了。”我看了看时间：凌晨三点！一想到我将父亲六个多小时的心血就被我几下就弄没了，而父亲却没太在意，我心里在充满后悔的同时也对父亲肃然起敬。

虽然，我的父亲不是伟人，也不是民族英雄，更谈不上是百万富翁，可他对我的爱也是最无私的。

在此我真想对父亲大声说一声：“父亲，我爱你！”

我的爸爸是一名中学电脑教师。我的大多数时间都是和妈妈一起度过。在我的记忆中，爸爸总是对我很严厉，而且特别忙碌。可有一件事，使我彻底改变了对爸爸的看法。

记得那是一个炎热的夏天，周六上午的兴趣班放学了。按照惯例，我都等着妈妈来接，因为学校离我家有4公里远。我口干舌燥，可我左等右等，还是不见妈妈的影子。于是，我决定自己走路回家。走在路上，我感到又累又渴，恨不得插上翅膀就飞回家里，可书包就像千斤巨石，压在我的背上动弹不得。

回到家，我整个人已经汗流浃背，浑身就像淋了雨一样。可是家门还是紧闭着，我敲来敲去可还是不见妈妈来开门。我把那沉重的书包挂在了门的把手上，就去找爸爸。我来到爸爸的办公室，只见爸爸还在认真地工作。他看见我一头汗水，赶紧问：“……是怎么……回事……”爸爸的声音有些哽咽。我把事情一五一十地跟爸爸说了一遍。爸爸赶紧给我拿毛巾擦擦汗，让我喝了点水，又为我端来了热气腾腾的午饭。我狼吞虎咽地吃着，好像比任何时候都要好吃。此时此刻，爸爸就坐在我的对面，默默地看着我……

吃完午饭，我就休息了。蒙蒙胧胧中，依稀地听见爸爸小声地责怪妈妈：“你呀，只顾逛街，这么热都不及时去接孩子。真是……”妈妈也没有辩解，只是一个劲地说对不起。直到后来，我才知道，妈妈那天也是忙于工作，并非是爸爸说的那样。

其实，在爸爸责怪妈妈的时候，我就懂得了父爱，知道爸爸是从心底里爱我的。父亲的爱，是沉沉甸甸的，不会直接表达。可父爱在我心中印象最深，受益最大。
