The Dragon Boat Festival, also called the Duanwu Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese calendar. For thousands of years, the festival has been marked by eating zong zi (glutinous rice(糯米)wrapped to form a pyramid using bamboo or reed leaves) and racing dragon boats.

The festival is best known for its dragon-boat races, especially in the southern provinces where there are many rivers and lakes. Thisregatta(赛舟会)commemorates the death of Qu Yuan , an honest minister who is said to have committed suicide by drowning himself in a river. Qu was a minister of the State of Chu situated in present-day Hunan and Hubei provinces, during theWarring States Period(475-221BC)(战国时期). He was upright, loyal and highly esteemed for his wise counsel that brought peace and prosperity to the state. However, when a dishonest and corrupt prince vilified Qu, he was disgraced and dismissed from office. Realizing that the country was now in the hands of evil and corrupt officials, Qu grabbed a large stone and leapt into the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth month. Nearby fishermen rushed over to try and save him but were unable to even recover his body. Thereafter, the state declined and was eventually conquered by the State of Qin.

The people of Chu who mourned the death of Qu threw rice into the river to feed his ghost every year on the fifth day of the fifth month. But one year, the spirit of Qu appeared and told the mourners that a hugereptile(爬行动物)in the river had stolen the rice. The spirit then advised them to wrap the rice in silk and bind it with five different-colored threads before tossing it into the river.

During the Duanwu Festival, a glutinous rice pudding called zong zi is eaten to symbolize the rice offerings to Qu. Ingredients such as beans,lotus seeds(莲子),chestnuts(栗子), pork fat and the golden yolk of a salted duck egg are often added to the glutinous rice. The pudding is then wrapped with bamboo leaves, bound with a kind of raffia and boiled in salt water for hours.

The dragon-boat races symbolize the many attempts to rescue and recover Qus body. A typical dragon boat ranges from 50-100 feet in length, with a beam of about 5.5 feet, accommodating two paddlers seated side by side.

A wooden dragon head is attached at the bow, and a dragon tail at thestern(船尾). A banner hoisted on a pole is also fastened at the stern and the hull is decorated with red, green and blue scales edged in gold. In the center of the boat is a canopied shrine behind which the drummers,gong(铜锣)beaters andcymbal(铙钹)players are seated to set the pace for the paddlers. 每年的五月初五是端午节。记得今年端午节那天，我们一家带在着水果和绿豆糕去外婆家过节。

一走进外婆家的门，就看见外婆正在和面，我奇怪地问：“外婆，今天是不是要吃手工面啊？”外婆笑着说：“不是，今天是端午节，外婆想做几个“面花”给你吃。”““面花”是什么？”““面花”又叫“巧姑”，只有心灵手巧的姑娘才能做出又漂亮又松脆的“面花”。”我一边拍手，一边连声说：“好哇，好哇。今天我也来做“巧姑”。”

不一会儿，外婆把和好的面团放在桌子上，并拿来擀面杖，把面团擀成一个大大的麦饼。妈妈拿来菜刀，把麦饼切成一个个边长约为一分米的正方形。外婆把正方形对折，折成一个个三角形，外婆再拿来一把剪刀，在三角形上剪上 5 、 6 刀。只见外婆把三角形上的细面条左边翻一条，右边翻一条，不一会儿就翻出了一朵朵的花儿。没通过外婆同意，我就迫不及待地拿来一片三角形的面，拿起剪刀“啪啪”地剪了几刀，学着外婆的样翻出了一朵花。

翻完了，外婆把“躺”着的“面花”放进热腾腾的油锅里，锅里响起一阵“滋滋滋滋”的声音，并且出现了许多小泡泡，慢慢地“面花”的颜色逐渐变深变黄了，最后变成了金黄色。外婆就把“面花”捞了起来，一阵香味迎面扑来。我忍不住拿起一只连烫也顾不得把它塞进嘴里。啊！真是又香又脆，一只还没吃完，又拿起另一只，我突然发现，“面花”分明像一只小鸟，我说：““面花”像一只只小鸟。”外婆说：“没错，有的地方叫“麦鸟”。”

那一天，外婆还为我包了粽子，染了几个红鸡蛋，最有趣的是妈妈用彩线为我编了几只小袋子，把红鸡蛋放进小袋子里就成了一种特殊的香包，外婆把它挂在我脖子上，说可以驱鬼辟邪得健康。一听可以驱鬼辟邪，我连忙拿起一只就挂在爸爸车里的反光镜上。

这天，我们带着自做的香包，带着一路的“平安”，带着外婆的期望回了家。

南北朝时期，出现杂粽。米中掺杂禽兽肉、板栗、红枣、赤豆等，品种增多。粽子还用作交往的礼品。 到了唐代，粽子的用米，已“白莹如玉”，其形状出现锥形、菱形。日本文献中就记载有“大唐粽子”。宋朝时，已有“蜜饯粽”，即果品入粽。诗人苏东坡有“时于粽里见杨梅”的诗句。这时还出现用粽子堆成楼台亭阁、木车牛马作的广告，说明宋代吃粽子已很时尚。元、明时期，粽子的包裹料已从菰叶变革为箬叶，后来又出现用芦苇叶包的粽子，附加料已出现豆沙、猪肉、松子仁、枣子、胡桃等等，品种更加丰富多彩。

赛龙舟，是端午节的主要习俗。相传起源于古时楚国人因舍不得贤臣屈原投江死去，许多人划船追赶拯救。他们争先恐后，追至洞庭湖时不见踪迹。之后每年五月五日划龙舟以纪念之。借划龙舟驱散江中之鱼，以免鱼吃掉屈原的身体。竞渡之习，盛行于吴、越、楚。 其实 ，“龙舟竞渡”早在战国时代就有了。

在急鼓声中划刻成龙形的独木舟，做竞渡游戏，以娱神与乐人，是祭仪中半宗教性、半娱乐性的节目。 后来，赛龙舟除纪念屈原之外，在各地人们还付予了不同的寓意。中国古代崇拜五色，以五色为吉祥色 。因而，节日清晨，各家大人起床后第一件大事便是在孩子手腕、脚腕、脖子上拴五色线 。系线时，禁忌儿童开口说话。 五色线不可任意折断或丢弃，只能在夏季一场大雨或第一次洗澡时，抛到河里。 据说，戴五色线的儿童可以避开蛇蝎类毒虫的伤害；扔到河里，意味着让河水将瘟疫、疾病冲走，儿童由此可以保安康 。

孟元老的《东京梦华录》卷八记载：端午节物，百索、艾花、银样鼓儿，花花巧画扇，香糖果子、粽小，白团 。紫苏、菖蒲、木瓜、并皆茸切，以香药相和 ，用梅红匣子盛裹 。自五月一日及端午前一，日卖桃、柳、葵花、蒲叶、佛道艾 。 次日家家铺陈於门首，与五色水团、茶酒供养 。又钉艾人於门上，士庶递相宴赏。
