宋人的巧思还不仅限于此。同样是禳毒的菖蒲及艾草，他们也会加点花样，使它的外形艺术化。吴自牧的《梦梁录》(序于一二七四年)卷三记载南宋杭州的端午：“以艾与百草缚成天师，悬于门额上，或悬虎头白泽”。也有人以泥塑天师像，以艾为头，以蒜为拳，悬在门上辟邪。“天师”及“虎”是未朝端午最常出现的两种形象，因为他们的外形威猛，足以镇慑邪魔外道。同时也可看出道教对端午习俗的影响。
