My father, Winston Churchill, began his love affair with painting in his 40s, amid disastrous circumstances. As First Lord of the Admiralty in 1915, he was deeply involved in a campaign in the Dardanelles that could have shortened the course of a bloody world war. But when the mission failed, with great loss of life, Churchill paid the price, both publicly and privately. He was removed from the admiralty and effectively sidelined.

Overwhelmed by the catastrophe — “I thought he would die of grief,” said his wife, Clementine —he retired with his family to Hoe Farm, a country retreat in Surrey. There, as Churchill later recalled, “The muse of painting came to my rescue!”

Wandering in the garden one day, he chanced upon his sister-in-law sketching with watercolors. He watched her for a few minutes, then borrowed her brush and tried his hand. The muse had cast her spell!

Churchill soon decided to experiment with oils. Delighted with this distraction from his dark broodings, Clementine rushed off to buy whatever paints she could find.

For Churchill, however, the next step seemed difficult as he contemplated with unaccustomed nervousness the blameless whiteness of a new canvas. He started with the sky and later described how “very gingerly I mixed a little blue paint on the palette, and then with infinite precaution made a mark about as big as a bean upon the affronted snow-white shield. At that moment the sound of a motor car was heard in the drive. From this chariot stepped the gifted wife of Sir John Lavery .”

“ ‘Painting!’ she declared. ‘But what are you hesitating about? Let me have the brush — the big one.’ Splash into the turpentine, wallop into the blue and the white, frantic flourish on the palette, and then several fierce strokes and slashes of blue on the absolutely cowering canvas.”

At that time, John Lavery— a Churchill neighbor and celebrated painter— was tutoring Churchill in his art. Later, Lavery said of his unusual pupil: “Had he chosen painting instead of statesmanship, I believe he would have been a great master with the brush.”

In painting, Churchill had discovered a companion with whom he was to walk for the greater part of the years that remained to him. After the war, painting would offer deep solace when, in 1921, the death of the mother was followed two months later by the loss of his and Clementine’s beloved three-year-old daughter, Marigold. Battered by grief, Winston took refuge at the home of friends in Scotland, finding comfort in his painting. He wrote to Clementine: “I went out and painted a beautiful river in the afternoon light with crimson and golden hills in the background. Alas I keep feeling the hurt of the Duckadilly (Marigold’s pet name).”

Historians have called the decade after 1929, when the Conservative government fell and Winston was out of office, his wilderness years. Politically he may have been wandering in barren places, a lonely fighter trying to awaken Britain to the menace of Hitler, but artistically that wilderness bore abundant fruit. During these years he often painted in the South of France. Of the 500-odd canvases extant, roughly 250 date from 1930 to 1939.

Painting remained a joy to Churchill to the end of his life. “Happy are the painters,” he had written in his book Painting as a Pastime, “ for they shall not be lonely. Light and color, peace and hope, will keep them company to the end of the day.” And so it was for my father.

上午，我们从深圳飞往北京，下午我怀着无比激动的心情登上了飞往布鲁赛尔的飞机，飞机上我兴奋的难以入眠，心中期待着明天快一点到来，可还是因太过疲劳睡着了。空姐甜美的声音将我从睡梦中唤醒：“您现已到达比利时首都布鲁赛尔，地面温度8摄氏度，欢迎您的再次光临。”我们下飞机之后坐上了我们团队的大巴，大巴上我们认识了麦导。麦导介绍；“现在欧洲时间是早上七点四十五分，可中国却是下午两点四十五分，整整相差七个小时！（我觉得怪怪的，一时还不太习惯）我们的第一站是原子塔。”我怀着无比兴奋的心情期盼着，完全忘记了昨晚一夜的疲劳。“啊！到来！原子塔！"麦导说，我们兴奋的冲下车去，一眼就看见了顶天立地，气质非凡的原子塔，它由九个直径为十八米的“原子球”组成，它是为了纪念人类刚刚踏入原子世界而建造的，球里面还是个博物馆呢！非常有趣和壮观！随后我们去了号称“世界上最漂亮的广场”的布鲁赛尔大广场，观赏了市政厅。它独具风格，雄伟恢宏。“这是一座典型的古代弗兰德哥特式建筑，造型宏伟、空灵高耸、引人注目。市政厅大楼始建于1402年，它上面的厅塔高约91米。”麦导边走边给我们介绍着。我仔细欣赏着这个建筑，那独特而细致的风格，那精美的雕刻，那美妙绝伦的轮廓把我打动，此时此刻我心里似乎只有这华丽又神圣的市政厅了。广场左边还有著名的天鹅咖啡店呢！

下午我们乘车离开了华丽古老的布鲁赛尔，前往令人向往的浪漫之都——巴黎。经过3个小时的车程，我们到达了法国的首都巴黎，我们先去了著名的埃菲尔铁塔前留影。埃菲尔铁塔由7000吨的钢铁建成，塔高300米加上24米的电线，组成了巴黎的标志性建筑，组成了巴黎的骄傲！它经历了百年的风雨，经过20世纪80年代初的大修之后风采依旧，巍然屹立在塞纳河畔。后来我们还去了拿破伦为炫耀自己军功而兴建的凯旋门，还有世界最大的博物馆——卢浮宫。我亲眼见到了达芬奇的最高成就《蒙娜丽莎》，她的微笑令人琢磨不透。正如利尔克曾说过：“巴黎是一座无与伦比的城市。”

第二天，我们又来到了一个美丽的地方——卢森堡。当我刚踏入这个国家时就发现它像一个活泼的小女孩，富有青春的活力，那里有一个大峡谷，环境优美却又很神秘，让人想迫不及待去打开它的面纱看看它的真面目，大峡谷里时不时露出一座座古老城楼的遗迹，钢与柔的结晶，有种让人说不出的混合美，它的美丽深深地刻在了我的脑海之中。

随后我们还去了慕尼黑、法兰克福、萨尔茨堡等等……

最后我们便踏上了去音乐之家维也纳的旅途，一路上风景如画，十分迷人，蔚蓝的天空里只有一只只“小绵羊”奔跑着，望着这如诗如画如梦的风景，我迷迷糊糊睡着了，当我一觉醒来时已经到达了我向往已久的维也纳金色大厅。一进大厅在水晶灯得照耀下，整个大厅金碧辉煌、光彩夺目，给人一种至高无上的感觉，为此我为能来到这里而感到十分荣幸，我们这次表演非常成功，拿到了“银杏杯”国际金奖！

这次欧洲之旅，虽然很辛苦，但它让我受益匪浅，回味无穷！

Last winter holiday, I went to shanghai with my mother.

It＇s very cold in winter. There is snow and ice everywhere and you are always in a white world. You must wear warm clothes. The most exciting thing is playing with snow. Skating is also very interesting there.

I will＇ always remember shanghai, for the snow, the ice and all the beautiful things. I love shanghai.

With the general standard of living improving and the working week becoming shorter， more and more people are able to make a holiday trip to places of interest. While many like to join package tours fro convenience， I prefer to travel on my own.

I like travelling on may own not only because it costs much less but because it gives a great degree of independence and freedom. Travelling on my own， I’m my own boss； and can decide when to start on my way， where to linger a little longer and which spot can be skipped over to save energy or time for another spot. I can always adjust my plan. On the contrary， in a package tour you‘re deprived of as much freedom as in a military base. At the sound of the whistle， you have to jump up from a sound sleep and， with heavy-lidded eyes， hurry to the gathering place where you are collected and counted to board a coach. At the sight of the little flag waving， you must immediately take yourself away from the scenes you are marveling at and follow the guide whose sole interest is to cover all spots according to him strict schedule， regardless of the weather or your health condition.

True，you may encounter inconveniences if you travel inpidually，for instance， getting accommodations for the night and finding a place for meals. But nothing can be compared with the freedom which is vital to a person who takes a holiday trip mainly to escape from constraints of his routine life.

去年寒假，我和妈妈去了上海。

Sky in my hometown 家乡的天空

When I was very young ,the sky in my hometown was nice and beautiful, the sky was very blue,and the air was fresh. There were some birds singing ,and there were many trees in the fields. I often played with my friends in the open air.I liked it.

Now the people are rich ,but the sky in my homerown isnt blue .the trees were cut down , and there arent many birds. And the air isnt fresher than before. The rubbish is put here and there, it was bad for our health.So wo must do something to protect the environment. If we make a contribution to protecting the environment,the sky will become much more beautiful.

In my impression, there have been a lot of things, some happy, some sad, some sad, and some are very memorable. And in my mind, one of the most memorable things is that I skied for the first time.

I still remember that day is the lunar new year, we have a father with a colleague came to the Chaoyang park. I see a lot of people, one of the small stalls one by one can be really busy!

We came to the skiing field, which was my first skiing. I walked slowly to the snow in a sled. My uncle taught me some basic writing, and I slipped down on a small slope with sister Xuan Xuan. My sister and I want to slip from the highest place to Xuan Xuan. At this time, the heart of the father and mother in the underneath will jump out. At that time I thought I would skid as long as I had been taught by my uncle. So I slipped off without hesitation. I finally succeeded. My father and mother were happy to laugh, and my uncle and aunt applauded me. I felt very happy this day.

Although it has been a long time ago, I have been impressed. Its unforgettable.

With the advent of mobile phone and computer , the phenomenon that people

always are phubbing are becoming more and more popular.So many students phubbed

in the coach ,train or restaurant even walked on the road.

As to this issue,different people has different ideas .Some take the view

that it is no use connecting but may cause the big events .Such as the accident

or fight.There is no doubt that phubbing is a false behavior .While others think

the opposite,they agree that there is no way but have to do it .because the time

is limited.

As far as I am concerned ,every coin has two sides .while most people

prefer it,the phubbing is a bad habit .As a matter of fact ,a few person mostly

do a good deed.

Recently we did a survey in our class in order to learn about students’

ideal jobs. Here’s a report about my group members’ ideas.

Mary wants to be a fashion designer because she likes beautiful clothes and

is good at drawing. Kate wants to be a gardener, she lives plants, and she wants

to make the cities better. Mike would like to be a writer. He’d like to share

his wonderful stories with others. Tom would like to be a cook. He’d like to

cook delicious food for others. I would like to be a policeman. I want to

protect the people safe.

Hopefully everyone can realize their dreams in the future.
