their parents. Then each child will get money as a New Year gift, wrapped up in

red paper. People in northern China will eat jiaozi, or dumplings, for

breakfast, as they think "jiaozi" in sound means "bidding farewell to the old

and ushering in the new". Also, the shape of the dumpling is like gold ingot

from ancient China. So people eat them and wish for money and treasure.

Southern Chinese eat niangao (New Year cake made of glutinous rice flour)

on this occasion, because as a homophone, niangao means "higher and higher, one

year after another." The first five days after the Spring Festival are a good

time for relatives, friends, and classmates as well as colleagues to exchange

greetings, gifts and chat leisurely.

China has 56 ethnic groups. Minorities celebrate their Spring Festival

almost the same day as the Han people, and they have different customs.

Thank you for informing us your new house address. It is fantastic that you have at last a house of your own, which, as explained, is located in a sea site city. I can imaginer that you are now enjoying your life and work, and you can entertain yourselves in such a big house.

When I told the news to Peter Li, James Wang and Nancy Zhang, the girl who always wears a long hair, and went to Beijing with us last year, they all wish you to send us some pictures of your new house. We hope that when we go on errand in America next year, we can pay a visit to your family. Then we are sure to have a nice gathering.

This morning, Peter and I went to an art gallery to pick up an oil painting with a beauty spot of China’s southern part as a token of our hearty congratulations. We hope it can add up to your decorations wherever you like, and we also wish you will like it.

一、植树的好处:

(1)树木的分泌物能杀死细菌。空地每立方米空气中有3，4万个细菌，森林里只有300-400个。植树造林是我们每个公民的义务，国家还专门规定了在三月十二日这天为植树节。植树造林对我们的学习、工作、生活等方面都有很大的好处。

(2)树可以减低温度，和提高湿度。30度气温可以降到二十几度左右。

人类对自然资源的不合理开发利用，是造成生态失衡的主要?因。乱砍滥伐、毁林开荒、过度放牧等，会破坏森林和草场，造成水土流失和土地荒漠化，使沙尘暴频繁出现。不合理的开发、占用土地，使耕地面积日益减少。

(3)树木能调节气候，保持生态平衡，树木通过光合作用，吸进二氧化碳，吐出氧气，使空气清洁，新鲜。一亩树林放出的氧气够65人唿吸一辈子。

(4)树能防风固沙，涵养水土，还能吸收各种粉尘，一亩树林一年可吸收各种粉尘20—60吨.。

(5)树林能减少噪音污染。40米宽的林带可减弱噪音10—15分贝。噪音的污染对人类的生活、学习、工作、休息等方面都造成了很大的危害，可以说是人们的“敌人”。因此我们更要重视植树造林。噪音还可以使人类在长期的生活中听力减弱、耳聋、变傻，心脏、血压、神经等出现异常。甚至，还能让人在长期的噪音煎熬下死亡。这样树林就能使噪音减小四、五倍。

现在，我们了解了植树造林这么多的好处，我们就更要自觉履行植树造林的义务，为创造我们美好的家园奠定基础。植树造林不仅对于人类的生存具有十分重要的环境效益，而且对于人类的生产和生活具有巨大的经济效益。

二、各国植树节风情:

墨西哥： 每年6月至9月的雨季里开展植树节活动;

哥伦比亚： 每年10月12日为植树节;

萨尔瓦多： 植树节和教师节合在一起，在每年的6月21日举行;

法国： 每年3月为法定的绿化月，3月31日为植树日;

英国： 每年1月6日至12日为全国植树周;

意大利： 每年1月21日为植树节;

保加利亚：每年的4月2日至8日举行传统的森林周活动;

瑞典： 每年3月举行森林周活动;

芬兰： 6月24日是植树节。

在上述国家中，美国的植树节最早，已有130多年的历史。1872年4月10日，由内布拉斯加州一新闻记者发起美国第一个植树节。当天，内布拉斯加州全境种树超过100万。
