目前分布于我国的四个老虎亚种（东北虎、华南虎、孟加拉虎和印支虎）中，惟有华南虎是中国独有的。19世纪以前，华南虎曾经广泛分布于以我国东南部为主的国内广大地区。20世纪后，由于自然环境变迁、战乱纷扰及人类活动影响等多方面的原因，华南虎的分布区域不断受到挤压，分布地域面积逐渐缩校直至上个世纪80年代以前，由于捕猎和砍伐森林等活动，使华南虎赖以生存的栖息地受到破坏，华南虎的数量急剧减少。
